I was reading over some statistics on a website and at the top they have, "figures listed are in millions." So if the number is 12,000 how much is that? 1.2x10 to the power of ten, 12 thousand million, or 120 billion? (I think all those numbers are the same amount.)

It depends on what country you're in. I would say 12 thousand million is 12 billion.
In the USA, a billion is a thousand million. In the UK (I think) a billion is a million million.

Dave is right, in theory, except that the American billion has largely taken over now - a bit like the grey squirrel / red squirrel issue.
I'm a great fan of the English language, and would rather keep the billion as one million million. After all, there's a perfectly lovely word in English that already describes a thousand million - it's a milliard.
