I'm not sure how many people actually read the new introductions, but I thought I'd drop a quick line in here anyway to say to everyone.
I was always interested in magic as a child but never pursued it. Like any other kid I enjoyed seeing the amazing feats (even if they weren't all that amazing) that could be performed by these talented prestidigitators. As a teenager I was involved in a youth organization called the Air Cadet League of Canada, and one summer while at a camp for six weeks one of the other cadets taught me a couple of card tricks in exchange for me teaching him some martial arts. It was only after this that I took a particular interest in the performance side of magic. I've never really been one to buy too many invididual tricks, as I prefer books and what-not that allow me to learn techniques I can use to massage my own effects, but I have purchased a couple of things for children's shows (mouth coils are amazingly well received, crystal tube, thumbtip and silks etc...) The first book I picked up was the Amateur Magician's Handbook, followed by the stars of magic blue covered book, Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, Royal Road to Card Magic, a book or two by Jean Hugard, etc. While I'm mostly just a magic hobbyist, I do perform the odd children's magic show throughout the year as well as making balloon animals for charitable events. I started in my professional career a couple of years ago, and oddly enough I'm doing more shows now then I was when I was more actively involved in magic. I think I'm doing a total of 6 or 7 kids shows for client events, office parties, picnics etc this year. Anyway...Hi everyone...I look forward to some great magic conversations with everyone here... The impossible things are often the untried.
Magic is not what you see. It's about what you make others see. |

Hey Dave-
I was always interested in magic when I was really young, too. It wasn't until I was about 10 that I really got into it, though.... and the Amateur Magician's Handbook was one of my first, as well! |

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone
Tyrael07 - I know Jiu-jitsu (though admitedly I haven't practiced in quite a while), some kung-fu, and a dab of aikido. He wanted me to teach him some phillipino stick fighting techniques in exchange for some lessons with cards. Chrystal - Actually I'm surprised at the number of people that have replied...so far everyone seems to be really friendly, and extremely helpful through the message threads... Angela - Yeah it's a great book...I still like to flip through it occasionally just to refresh my memory on what's in it. Too bad it's out of print now... Dave |
