I recently aquired some items from a magician's estate. I really appreciate the knowledge that the people on this forum have been willing to share.
This is a mirror box but different from ones I have seen before. One face is open and has the mirror to make it look empty. The opposite face has the door and the other faces are solid. The handle is off center. I'm sure this is so that when you have a small animal inside the box it will hang more or less level when lifted by the handle. Can anyone identify the manufacturer or explain the handling? I'm not sure what this arrangement offers over the more conventional mirror box. Click here to view attached image. |

Next View In this view the door is on top and the open side with the mirror is face down on the table.

Another view. Note the position of the handle is not centered but is toward the door where the weight would be when loaded.

Also, why the tiny knob that you have to use your fingernails to open the door?

Hi MMM
This reminds me of an Abbott's mirror box--or it might be a home-made copy-- I believe there were two slightly differently designed mirror boxes--one for the vanish and the other for the reappearance of a small animal. That little catch was common in Abbott's products back in the 1960's or so. Let's let this perk for awhile and if no one else comes-up with more precise information, I'll see if I can find more specifics in an old Abbott's catalog. Julie |

This appears to be a home made version.well made but maybe not from a major manufacture. The lack of a fancy paint job makes it suspect...an easy task to replace the catch with something a bit thicker if its a problem...
God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

It's in the same style as Abbott's Surrounded Livestock Vanish although I do not know if the one you have was made by Abbott's.
Here's an old Abbott catalog illustration: Here's a quickie demo by Greg Bordner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9pI3UU4k7M Although the catalog listing says "attactively finished in bright colors" the one demo'ed by Greg Bordner in the video above looks rather plain. If you emailed photos to Greg he might be able to tell you if they made it. . |
