Your favorite...a special Temple Screen and the puppet could peek out and perform from within the prop

There is an effect out were you walk out carrying a large present then when you set it down on a table you then produce santas or the company president etc. you may have to modify it a bit, the idea of carrying the present out and having a human pop out works well because of the weight factor they are going to think the box was empty........may not think that with a puppet!
heres one how about a tip over trunk(smaller version) rigged so that it shakes and rattles maybe even some smoke comes out(after you have shown it empty) then you produce the puppet? whatever you do when you produce the puppet make sure it is propped up well and not just thrown in there!

Matt -
A Parker Swan Doll House Trick may work for you. (I don't own one, nor have I seen one. I seem to recall reading in a book at one time as to the method, but I can't recall which book.) You may need to purchase this trick, and if it isn't the right size, then you still have permission (ethically) to make and use a custom sized one for your application. Remember not to make one if you haven't purchased one first. Support the creator. The themeing of the prop seems to fit with what you want to produce from it. - Donald.

If it is a puppet I assume it can be made to fit in a small space. I think it would be funny to have a small suitcase on your table and during your act we hear a voice from the case asking to be let out. (Use a small tape recorder). Then take this big puppet out of a small place. Stuff like that is very magical looking even though it requires no real magic props or technique at all.

I love franks idea as it adds more of a routine to theproduction as opposed to just a prop your using.
To add to his general idea, you could rig it up so that you hear the voice and have no idea where it is coming from, You hear it again and go over and open the lid to hear a huge (sigh of relief). You tell him/her that your doing a show and to just wait till later. You close the lid and this time hear banging on the lid, you walk over and finally agree to leave the lid open to allow him/her some air. As you go along with your routine you hear Barney music or a kids song come on and you hear the puppet dancing and singing. You walk over to convince him/her that you must be quiet while you perform the effect your doing. You continue with your routine and tell him to just play some cards while he is waiting. You place cards into the case and walk away. periodically cards are seen to shoot out of the case on their own as the puppet starts to make a mess. Well you get the idea and how this can be a running gag through out the show or even a routine all by itself. Great idea Frank. Kyle

Great stuff Frank and Kyle! I put your ideas in my notebook already. I use a very large duck puppet from time to time and am already brainstorming how to adapt your ideas for one of my shows. Thanks for getting the old creative juices flowing.

Not aproblem at all. I hope the ideas help spark more and you can create a comical routine that will have the kids howling with laughter and having a lot of fun with you.
I think using it as a running gag could be very comical and there are lots of things you could rig up inside the suitcase to have happen periodically through the show before the puppet makes his or her fiinal appearance. Another great comedy idea is to have the puppet get introduced by you by you going "ta-da" but of course he does not show up. Ypou go over to talk to him and he says he is not coming out unless he gets his own theme song music. This could be funny as you attempt to find the right music to have him make his appearance with. Just an idea. Kyle

Here's something I've always wondered.
When kids see a vent doll / puppet go into and out of a suitcase at a show, do they ever try to copy that by trying to stuff their (real live) little brother or sister into a suitcase at home? I hope not, and I would think not. But none-the-less, food for thought. This may be one of those touchy topics, like fire in kids shows, swords and knives in kids shows, and mouth coils in kids shows. - Donald.

It is a good question. I do not use a vent figure and would love to hear how any vent people here may handle this situation or if it has even ever come up for them.

Just another idea.
Get a "Bowling Ball From Breifcase" or "Basketball From Breifcase". Throw away the ball and put the puppet inside. Do the routine as normal and then produce the puppet. S. Patrick |

What you need to take into account matt is that if you are producing this puppet, you can't produce it dead.
By that I mean he has to be moving and alive when the kids see him. With this in mind you have to come up with a way that just before you reveal him, you can get your arm/ hand into it. A still puppet is a dead inanimate object, a moving puppet is a live charactor.

Ye, I thought about that but magic has got to have a reason, he's in bed ill get him out he's not their etc then produce him and say he's asleep wel wake him up after 3. something like that.
