I could use some advice here.
I am looking to work on some close up mentalism/walk up mentalism to go along with my cabaret/stage act. I've heard of Mark Strivings "Moble Mentalism" and am wondering if anyone has used it or has heard about it. There is a DVD called "Fundamentalism" by David Eldridge. Has anyone used this DVD? Any other recommedations would be apprieciated. |

The second volume of Max Maven's video series Max Maven's VideoMind is close up mentalism.

Hi, mentalmagic,
The first effect in Doug Dyment's "Mindsights" is a close-up/walkaround version of the magic square. It uses business cards and has several nice features. The main one: you can do it with a different set of numbers every time, and it's still self-working. That means you can repeat the effect at the same table immediately, and do not need to worry about adjacent tables comparing notes. federico |

(Mmmm, methinks something strange is in the air)
Yes, MentalMagic, this SHOULD be a great place to ask such questions. But it seems something's afoot here. But let me continue... I HAVE MARK'S MOBILE MENTALISM. It has some great routines in it that any search WILL disclose for you (PRECISELY what routines they would be). I tend to think that if yo have searched out Mark's book then you can't be THAT LAZY after all! Practically all are usable in real world situations (my biggest struggle is Sort-Of-Numerology, but then again I haven't taken the time to get comfortable with the structure). But more than just routines, IMHO, is seeing Mark and friends' thinking around what would constitute walkaround mentalism. I'm still a bit of a purist. I appreciate strong, direct effects; but wouldn't go table-hopping or strolling doing mentalism pieces. I reserve the 'close-up' for small intimate gatherings where I'm considered a guest and NOT the entertainment, and in this setting the mentalism comes off more 'real' then having to go up to somebody and 'show them something'. I think that you loose an amount of plausability if you don't plan your material well - you may come off looking like you're doing a bunch of 'mind tricks' stacked together. But I digress... Personal favorites are: Warm Fuzzy's Up Close for such intimate gatherings. Docc Hilford's Pendulum Knows is great for crowd interaction and pseudo-readings. And Mark's Predic-A-Date is nice to carry around in your wallet (and with a little thought the 'dirty work' can be made easier). Unfortunately I don't know the DVD you mentioned. But I can second Max Maven's Videomind for very strong and direct 'close-up' mentalism. There is of course lots more out there - providing you know exactly what you want to achieve. If you're just looking to do table-hopping/walkaround situations etc, its probably best to stick to mental/magic effects with playing cards etc. At least then you will encounter more believability (within the context of what it is you're wanting to do). Ps. 2 things: 1) You mention having a stage/cabaret act. I presume you mean a Mentalism themed act. What message are you giving your audience if you come to their table or intrude on their space, versus the authority you exude on stage? Don't give out mixed messages. 2) You did say in your original post that 'ANY OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED'. I believe rgranville, Myster, and federico did exactly that. Those are great suggestions that will help you. I trust this helps. |

Yes I have a couple of routines that I find are great for close up mentalism.
Head over to magictricks.co.uk and you'll find an effect called: "pre-coin-ition" This is great. a spectator chooses one coin out of five. You predict exactly which coin is schosen and also which way up it is. You can't go wrong with PK time by banachek either! And of course there is nothing like the good old NW or CT! |

TeeJay, If you read Jo's post you will see that he is talking about a book.
I won't give it away as I think people here should read the posts before asking questions, it is all there.

Thanks for the help so far.
My reasoning for asking about the Strivings book and the DVD is that I am looking to see if it's practical and possible to do "close up" mentalism. Here in the UK it seems that there is not as a big demand for "mentalism" acts as there appears to be in the US. A few members of the Coventry Magic Circle perform the traditional close up magic as well as the odd mentalist stuff. Due to some nerve damage in my fingers, doing card slights is not really that possible. I am a "working" performer as my web page will show, so I am not looking for quick fixes or short cuts. I will do another search here, but given that this "Penny for your thoughts" fourm is up and running, I thought I'd take a chance and see if anyone here "live" might be familiar with either the book and the DVD and perhaps give some current thoughts on it. Failing that, if someone does know the relivant link for me to use, by all means feel free to direct me to it. |

Richard Osterlansd has some good routines for close up work.
Center tear and one called "Loose Chang(?)" Which is a triple prediction routine. Good Stuff. I always use my invisible deck for close up shows. For a variation of the invisible deck/brainwave theme look in the Magic of Don Alan Book for a trick called Clyde. |

The DVD, Fundamentalism, is a great place to begin learning some very cool mentalism. Of course, I am a bit biased.

DPE666, I'm just now learning you are David Eldridge. I didn't know before. I've seen your DVD on Hank Lee's Shelf, and by reading the routines they sound like great close-up pieces using ESP Cards. The only few ESP Effects I know are from Max Maven's tape. I'll have to buy your tape one day soon. Ed, (Eddini).
