While I would never use playing cards in a mentalism performance for the reasons mentioned it is because I work for a general audience. Of course, cards are more typical and accepted in a metaphysical store and to that audience.

The question posed appeared as it to apply generally to mentalists most of which perform for general audiences. Once again, context is king.

Sure if you perform for a magic audience cards are no problem. Sure if you perform in casinos cards are no problem. But these along with metaphysical venues are specific or niche markets and audiences and typically would not apply to such generalizations as to mentalists and most's general audiences.

Alexandre,
I can't get rid of the feeling that you created this thread only for the purpose of getting people to click on your signature?
I mean... this is a topic that always gets people going and in your three posts you always ask people to click on your signature or hint on a secret routine you might have to sell?
Please... if you'd like to advertise something just do so openly!

Jair, please do not click on my signature.

This is the kind of thing that turns people off to the Café. Particularly the Penny For Your Thoughts section.

Go back and read what I wrote. Is this all you've gotten from what I've written in this thread?

And please, once again, don't click on my signature.

His evil tricks won’t work on me. I’ve already purchased Dr. Wendy Woo’s Black Swan and Remote Viewing experiment a long time ago.(Both are excellent.)

You have already enjoyed and spent my money Alexandre. Jokes on you!

No harm meant. I am sure Alexandre´s material is excellent.
Just a little tired of those 90's sales tactics...

Can't say I've ever seen a forum signature called a 90's sales tactic before.

Back to the topic, as it's been discussed before, this will simply come down to the performer's individual comfort and taste. If a performer feels like it will associate them too much with magic, then they should by all means avoid it.

I think a key here is in what you're presenting

If you want to appear to read minds in the "purest" way then using them might be unfruitful

Instead think of ASKING for a favourite card

or doing hands off style THINKING effects

I think cutting cards or taking a bunch is more mental magic

But I don't think they're irrelevant

I don't have an issue with playing card in Mentalism, it's just not my style. I like Mentalism in part because it is so different than magic in general and playing cards have become ubiquitous as a magic prop.
