Is there any advantage of using Commercial shells for shell game over simple bottle caps? Kindly clarify. Thank you!

It all really comes down to where you are using them.

If your hustling on the street you do NOT want to use your beautiful expensive shell and pea set. Obviously, if you have to ditch them, you want something cheap and easily obtainable such as bottle caps.

However if you are performing as a professional magician...most people recognize or have heard of the 3 Shell & Pea game. So it makes sense to use your beautiful custom shells. Plus these shells are usually designed to handle well and make certain slights easier. Sleights and moves you would probably not use if hustling (such as covering the shell with a shot glass for a finale.) No worries about having to ditch or lose a set.

I understand, Thank you, but if I refer to the shell game as shell game, its really easy to search it on the internet, and there are too many videos on youtube explaining how its done Smile

It doesn't matter how many videos people see, they will be taken by the game anyway, they will be surprised and fooled by a demonstration. It is not a magic trick.

It really doesn't matter what is used. The three shells and the pea have a "hide and seek" quality that is irresistible to people. Some peas and shells have handling advantages, but these are mostly minor. It is not a magic trick--the audience thinks they understand everything that is happening. There is no "secret" as far as the audience is concerned. They believe that you are secretly moving the pea from one shell to another by sleight of hand. There is no sense of the impossible, but rather the "unbelievable" skill of the operator. The shell game is not a magic trick--not a demonstration of the impossible. If it is presented as magic, the audience will lose a lot of interest.

The shell game is a remarkable sleight of hand demonstration, that for the audience approaches preternatural skill.

I think it is a good and natural interlude in a magic performance.

The story the audience will later tell of an impossible event like a magic trick will be different from one they will tell about the shell game.

The choice of shells, caps, brass cups, half potatoes or whatever is made on the basis of the story you want to tell and the character you are portraying.
