Juan Tamariz has a very unique style. Sometimes he will shout between the trick, and then immediately smile to make it comic. Sometimes, he will be disappointed toward the outcome of the trick, and then near the climax, he will shout yes, yes, yes, like he is himself amazed that the trick worked. What is the method or theory behind this character? Why does it work so beautifully, magically? Is it explained in the magic rainbow? Thank you.

One aspect of performance that a magician can neglect is to make choices about what his or her attitude is to the magic that happens. There is no wrong answer, but if there is no choice at all, then it makes a performance very boring and flat.
A card rises from a deck. The performer might be surprised...puzzled...joyful...startled...relieved...upset...bored...not notice it...frightened...triumphant. The performer's response comes out of the back story of the magician and the powers. Does the magician know that s/he is the source of the magic? Does the magic work every time, or is the magic only sporadic? Does the magician enjoy his or her powers? Does it take any mental or physical toll? Did the magician need to practice it? Can the magician do greater magic but is hiding the true stuff? Is the magician sorry that s/he has this power? Is it hard socially to be a mutant? Is the magic completely under the magician's control or can it get away from the magician? Can the magician perform at any time or only under certain conditions? Why has the magician chosen to show this at this time in this place? These are all ideas to try out to add texture to a performance. None of this has to be stated explicitly to an audience, but pick an idea and then try carrying it out to its logical conclusion in a performance. Then evaluate what seems to work best for you.

Juan Tamariz is a thinker and he has analyzed magic, how it works and why, and has devised ways to communicate his theories. His contributions to our art are legendary.
You will find his theories spread across all of his books. The Magic Rainbow is a must-have if you want to understand the way Tamariz thinks. As far as his personality, it is iconic. Having said that, it is unique to him and should remain that way. I have seen some try to duplicate his mannerisms and it always comes off as an insincere, ill-conceived attempt. I've even seen some videos where the performer will urge the spectator to "shuffle, shuffle, shuffle", lacking only Juan's accent. I don't recommend it. It works for him. Find what works for you. It should be an outgrowth of your own habits and demeanor. One thing Mr. Tamariz is known for is his seemingly "moveless magic". That's why he fools magicians. They look for moves and moments which never seem to come. Then wham!, the magic has occurred.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....

Milippo,
I totally agree with you. I think landmark and Tortuga's replies are fantastic! Well done gentlemen. This is the kind of stuff that make magicians think about their magic and that is what we need more of. And what better subject than Juan Tamariz? As some might put it, Juanderful! Roberto

But I found them absolutely perfect to explain certain concepts to the OP. Shakuni, albeit having been on this forum for many years. asked a very simple question that means he is now trying to explore new paths in magic rather than just tricks and methods... Bombarding him with too many words, may have obtained the opposite result. Mark |
