It takes too long and ruins the timing. It doesn't matter what initials you have engraved on the ring, actually. That may be a matter of personal taste, though. I've seen a lot of live performances of this by people who really understood the presentation -- Kreskin, Virgil, Ted Lesley and all of them understood that what made THEIR routines strong was the "fact" that all three rings were borrowed. If this were not so, why does Jonathan Pendragon go through so much trouble to get the ring introduced into the routine? If you have the Stevens DVD you know what I'm referring to. The Stevens DVD has several good routines on it. The cleverest in many ways is the one Karrell Fox did. More telling is Joe Stevens' reaction and analysis of the situation. It's rather funny, actually. I learned about this idea from Karrell long before he put it on the video.

You're right Bill. The main reason for my response was to address Nico26 rudeness. However there is a brillant routine using your own ring that is somewhat underground. Nico26 obviously hasn't done his homework and I'm not about to give it to him seeing he chooses to be such a s**** a***

The stevens dvd is worth getting, and you could buy a cheaper himber ring to start off with.

How would you explain that? Bruce Kalver of Top Hat Productions sells a nice little book of routines. He also sold a switch box and plexi stick to use in some of his published routines. Magic Methods has a book on Ring Magic as well. Actually, the original Koran Linking Finger Ring Routine does not use a Himber Ring at all, he used a split ring for the effect with a wonderful ruse to show the rings linked. Himber sold his rings as a simple linking of 2 rings effect, those older then men can correct me if I am in error as I came into magic and Himber passed away 3 months later. It would be interesting to know who was the 1st magician to use the Himber Ring for the Koran Linking Finger Ring routine. Anyone know? |

Hi All
Is Karrel Fox´s Himberring routine published anywhere or is it only on the Stevens dvd? Is the Karrel Fox and McComb method similar? Best regards, Kristian Skovbo |

Karrol Fox just discusses his routine on the DVD. McComb method is more like the classic method of borrowing 3 rings and linking them in a stand up show. These presentations are not close-up presentations per say.
I would say go for Richard Osterline's routine, it is also like the classic method. |

Frenchman Freddy Fah, in an ice show, did a linking ring routine, and in the middle of the routine, skated up to a woman and borrowed her finger ring... he then linked it onto one of the large rings and skated around, showing it. Fawcett Ross knew about this and mentioned it in a letter to Persi Diaconis, who thought "why not link spectator's rings together?"
He went to Willy Schneider, a magician in the Jewelry business and created a gimmicked ring, which Richard Himber marketed as the Himber ring. Not sure who was the first to use this, but soon after Al Koran got it and developed his routine. As mentioned, Koran marketed really low tech version with a slit ring. Grant also marketed one like this. A good performer can use the cheapest and kill. I saw Kreskin get a standing ovation doing a horribly ham-fisted routine, but he sold it so well. Nick Lewin Kills with his routine. Lu Chen uses my Ghostly finger ring and his handling is so good it fools me. Get the Stevens Video and you will see all you need to know about routining. Actor/magician/GENIUS... Orson Welles, in his USO Show Victory Canteen, during WWII, borrowed several rings from GI's in the audience, putting them into a glass, and he tossed 'em all into the air and they came down linked. He then put them back onto a tray and his assistant (usually a female movie star) returned them. It is not hard to do.

"Nick Lewin Kills with his routine." (Pete)
OMG! Nick makes an entire second act, that is hugely entertaining and fascinating, with his ring. Probably the best for audience interaction and amazement I've ever seen. He could use a paperclip and it would still play well, because he IS the routine and the routine IS him! Wish I'd seen it more recently to remember the details. Thanks for the reminder Pete! Although, as you stated, it is a good example of how not to do it...so I guess a person could watch this and then follow it up with viewing Osterlind's version in order to experience both ends of the Himber Ring performance spectrum. Hi all
I have read a lot about Nick Lewin´s Linking finger ring routine, that he is now selling: http://remarkablemagic.com/nick-lewins-linking-finger-rings Is it just as good as everybody says? Is it shown on his video "Live in Las vegas"? |

I bought a DVD from Lewin after his live show at Vegas in the early 2011. It was called "iNick" or something like that. He does linking fingerrings there at least so I would assume that it is the same routine. He also did it in the show live. It had some differences from the common routines but lots of similarities as well. Cant really go into details on public forums. He is a worker and even without seeing the teaching tape I would be pretty certain to say that the routine must be a worker as well
