So, as I tinker with my latest project, I began to wonder what other people are working on? Their own stuff, or material from books, downloads, dvds, or tricks they bought? Which ones? And are you going to incorporate them into a show, or are you just doing it for your own pleasure?

With many possible ebooks based on coin related themes/original methods "in the works," I am prioritizing based on feedback from current releases.
Most requested is "Coin Vanish Inspirations" as a companion to my "Coin Production Inspirations." Second up is Miser type Effects using a baseball cap, modified to employ "Full On" production methods. Alas, there is a roof to patch and garden to tend and falling tree that crumpled my storage shed ... (the other side of life's coin)

Currently writing up a lot of my coin box magic. I wont lie its tough going converting what is in my head and also scribled in notebooks into an understandable form.... and don't get me started on typing !!
Showed some early drafts to a friend (Joe Cole) and he has been very encouraging so that's a good enough excuse to soldier on. Not sure wether to go with colour photos or black and white. Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated. All the best Nev

Good black and white photos on high resolution glossy paper are the best. Color is more expensive, and in my opinion do not enhance the clarity. Good luck with your project!

Michael, I am working on some of my own coin stuff like appearances and vanishes to put out as an e-book.
Nev Blenk, the important thing is to just get it done regardless on how you do it. Ideas are just ideas. If you tinker for too long, they will never be brought out for others to see and perform them. I can relate to your issue about struggling to put what's in your head into readable print format. I have an inch thick book of illusion ideas I have been working on for quite some time now, but the hardest thing for me has been creating storyboards for those ideas to be passed along to a graphic designer to make them professional. I am not an artist by any means and just doodle or draw with pen. I keep it in that strict way to prevent myself from having to redo images in pencil. Creating videos to go along with your book is not necessary if you can convey your thoughts. There is someone on this board who is a graphic designer and runs a monthly online magazine called the Hermit who can help with the images for a minimal fee. His name is Scott Baird. It's great to see magicians cranking away on new ideas. Keep the idea engine running guys. |

Thanks Fonda, glad you like it!
Nev, when I took the photos for my book, I set up a studio in my kitchen. I got a white backdrop from Amazon, and used a strip of LED lights to direct at any areas of shadows. I used a cell phone for the photos, and took the one hand shots myself, and had my wife climb a step stool behind me to get the two hand shots. I did the editing (cropping, light and contrast) on my phone, and converted them all to black and white. But it was the graphics artist who had to do something else to make them truely black and white. During that process some of the photos darkened, and the graphics person had to retouch up many of them. I think that is why in many books we see poor quality images - the photos need to be lightened, and the paper is important for the quality.

Michael, incredible that all the pics were done with a phone and phone apps. This is a lot of work. I would assume to be more efficient a camera, even an entry dslr and laptops' photo editing software. But you have a terrific book with great pics and I am not
If I need to chose a trick from your book to work on, what would you recommend for me (entry level) ? Thanks you ... Pablo |

Getting comfortable with dollar-sized coins.
Also working on Derek Dingle's "International Coin Trick." Does anyone else do this? It's a coins through the table trick with four different sized coins. It is not technically demanding, but I am not happy with my performance --- it looks studied and herky-jerky instead of smooth and nonchalant. Must work on my nonchalance! |

Thanks Pablo. Not being so computer savvy, I realized it would be a hassle to get photos into the computer from my camera, and I was comfortable with the easy editing features on the phone (the downloadable editing software looked beyond my pay grade). After my son finished playing college soccer I pretty much gave up my good camera, as phones now do a great job with quality of pictures and at high resolution (zoom isn't great with the phone, but there's the tradeoff).
As for a favorite routine that isn't too difficult, it is hard to choose. But of course there are routines I do all the time. The showpieces are tricks for a bigger audience and maybe more formal, but the stuff I like to do for everyday opportunities that are not difficult would be in no particular order (mentioning just a few): Magnetic Coins (a really a cool trick) Thumb through Coin Ungimmicked CSB Tallahassee Jumping Coins Coins Through Table (sit down and stand up) And please please please do not overlook Copper or Silver Extraction, Copper Penetration, and Handy Copper-Silver Transposition as a full set. I upgraded them from routines found in Bobo, but still not hard. I used to do these sitting at a dinner table using the dinner napkin as the handkerchief, but describe them in my book for stand up work. The project I am actually working on now uses a new utility item, and I have adapted these routines for its use. There are of course many more, but these aren't too difficult, different, and entertaining. Of course just a coin vanish and reproduction, and a flurry are quick and entertaining, as are spellbound, wild coin using a purse or coffee cup, a coins and purse routine, etc. Depends on sitting, standing, table or walk around, and if you are doing something for someone for the first time, or for someone who has seen you do stuff. But this thread isn't about my book. Love to hear what people are up to in the magic world. Glad to hear some are working on publishing original material, others on polishing up routines, etc. I recently received a new coin box that is being sold by Nathan Kranzo, and playing with that in addition to my own project.

Thanks for tips Michael.
I have already experimented with a white backdrop and some spotlights to eliminate as much shadow as possible. All my work is seated with a close up mat so I experimented with and without the pad (just a white surface). Results so far have been varied but nothing that cant be improved upon. For photos that needed to show both hands I used a 5 second timer on my phone camera (on a tripod) however this proved such a hassle that my partner has volunteered to be the photographer in future. Ironically the best batch of photo attempts so far were taken at our dining room table which gets lots of natural light during the afternoon. I didn't use any extra lights that time. A good friend of mine is a photographer so I plan on running the final batch past him. You are right they can come out a lot darker than you want so I am hoping he can adjust them. The ones in your book are crystal clear so I have a benchmark to show him. Once again - thanks Doc Joe Hohman - I love Dingle's stuff. Good luck with that. Best to all Nev
