Hi - I'm wondering if anyone knows of any books or other sources of Mnemonic based tricks (or any stack that I could substitute Mnemonica for),that don't require faros or complex math. I ask because it seems like a lot of what's out there requires these things. I'm not super advanced in my technique and some of the math manipulations I've seen seem onerous. I'm sure there must be amazing effects for a memorized deck that don't have these as requirements, but I'm not sure where to find these tricks. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks. By the way, if I've missed the answer to this somewhere in the forum, my apologies.

In Order To Amaze, by Pit Hartling is an excellent book and many of the tricks/routines do not require faros and/or math calculations "under fire" ...
Darwin Ortiz, in his books, has fantastic mem deck material and not all require much more than knowing the stack cold and perhaps being able to do an estimation cut Mark |

Maybe the video "Darwin Ortiz on the Memorized Deck" ? For example, I really like "Test Your Luck" which is explained in the video.
Test your luck is also described in "Lessons in Card Mastery" from Ortiz, which is a great book. I'm not sure how many other tricks in the book are based on memdeck-work, I just know "hard target" which is one of my favorith tricks (But this one requires faro shuffles). However, I think Faro shuffles are not that hard to learn - at the beginning I always thought that Faro's require some crazy amount of skill and practice, but with the right sources you can pretty quickly learn to do them reliable. |

I am not sure Mem Deck requires essentially faros and maths and you probably did not find yet this
alternative material. Unfortunately, it is often spread over several authors and books and it may take time to collect all of these jewels. Even in Mnemonica book, you can think about Memory Jumble (among others strong routines) as a strong routine without maths and faros. In the recent times, Matt Baker or Patrick Redford books have also such kind of material. |

Simon Aronson's books have quite a lot of mem-deck effects. Some are specific to his stack, but the vast majority will work with any memorised stack. As far as I remember, Simon's effects all use fairly simple sleights. He wasn't a guy who assumed everyone could do a Faro or Pass.
One of the great ideas I read about mem-decks (I think in Simon's essay Memories Are Made Of This) is that you can turn many pick-a-card tricks into name-any-card tricks. EG. You could do a version of Triumph where the spectator names a card instead of physically taking one. Here is an incredibly simple effect, but mind-boggling to spectators. You turn your back. Spectator cuts the deck, looks at the top card then buries it in the middle. You spread the deck, and are able to find their card. Seriously there are LOTS of things you can do. Just make sure you provide enough "smokescreen" that no one suspects the real method. |

But for this you won't need a memorized deck... Si Stebbins would do too ...Jan

Just use a very simple stack. You can do a lot with this
Another idea for you: ask the spectator to go into a shop and grab you a brand new deck of cards or have a factory-sealed deck Ask the spectator to open them. F___e shuffle and now you can do miracles too Bold, but don't underestimate the power of the brand new shuffled opened-by-spectator deck Lots of routines can stem from this Just a thought |

Neither Blind Nor Stupid by Juan Tamariz is a brilliant effect that does not require sleight of hand or mathematics. If you do it with a memorised deck, it is more powerful than the original version.

Another option to look into which can simplify memdeck work is using a marked deck that incorporates information for a stack.
I especially recommend the three covered in this article: Powerful Marked Bicycle Decks That Use a Stack. These are: - Gambler's Marked Deck by Boris Wild & Geno Munari (Maiden Back) - The Code by Andy Nyman (Maiden Back) - Marksman Deck by Luke Jermay (Mandolin Back) |

My point was that when you use a mem-deck all sorts of things become possible, in fact trivially easy! Incidentally -Jan's UNDER TEST CONDITIONS is an awesome demonstration of mind-reading. (He is obviously too modest to mention it) There is no complex math as far as I can recall. There are several other magicians with similar effects. (Eg Ed Oschman). I think Darwin Ortiz has a version that is perhaps not quite as mind-blowing, but maintains the stack order. Another one I like is INVISIBLE CARD by Simon Aronson. Spectator names any card. Magician goes through the deck, and that card is missing. Spectator looks through the deck, and the card is reversed. You can give this an Invisible Deck style of presentation. |
