I was watching the evening news tonight and one of the lead headlines was "Another murder in Lincoln Park..." I was just there last week scouting pitches and was planning to perform there as soon as I get my permit.

I'm new to the Chicago area, and don't really have any idea where better [safer] places to busk might be. Any locals willing to provide me some insight?

Joe

Wow, I can imagine that would discourage you. I have performed in some rough places also. I wouldn't worry so much, since you are probably going to be in a crowded area with a lot of people watching you. I wouldn't stick around after dark though. The thing that would most attract someone to you is the money that you are making. Pay attention while you are working. Don't let yourself be alone in a secluded area. Remember that people may be watching you even if you don't realize it. If they see you are making a lot of untraceable cash they may follow you as you walk back to the car at the end of the day. They may watch you over a period of several days to see where best to jump out and rob you. Always give them what they want. A $500 hat isn't worth dying for. I carry about $50 in ones rolled up, so that I can give it to someone quick if they rob me and I don't have to reach into my till. I also know exactly how much I'm out of if I'm robbed. I also carry a knife when I'm out. I've had to take it out a couple of times, but I've never had to use it. Sometimes just being armed can stop a situation that couldn't be stopped by just giving them money.

Because most of our income is in cash we need to be very careful of thieves. We are easy targets.

I want to thank you for answering a foolish question that has been bugging me for some months.

There's a band called "Linkin' Park" which obviously must come from Chicago. What confused me was that we here in Rhode Island have a "Lincoln Park" which is a locally famous dog track! I had wondered where "Linkin'" got their name from! Smile

Murderers seem to like magic. So at least you have the rapport with them.

Hmm.
I was expecting to read about the passing of Marlon Brando.

A quick internet search hints that they're from Los Angeles, not Chicago.

Here's a bit of LP history:
Quote:
Linkin Park's origin began in 1996 when rapper guitarist Brad Delson and the infamous Mike Shinoda started a band called Xero...

...When Mark Wakefield left the band, they changed their name to Hybrid Theory. Later "Phoenix" chose to leave the band to tour with another band, called "The Snax"...

...Some legal wrangling made it necessary to change the band's name. True to their "hybrid" spirit Linkin Park was chosen. Members drove by Lincoln Park regularly so why not use a similar sounding, unique name. Chester has been recorded to say he wanted a name which was unique, "where the music could define the name rather than the name define the music".

So, there's a "Lincoln Park" in Los Angeles too?

I'm guessing as he was a popular president, there are Lincoln Parks all over the country.
