CCF works just fine for either the top or bottom card. In either case you just need to proceed as if there is no doubt whatsoever about which card is the one that matters. I.e. you will see that all three examples (Ackerman, Bannon & Vinh) the magician himself indicates which card the spectator chose. What you can't do is ask the spectator to look at their card, because they might have a different assumption of whether to look at the top or bottom. This would put you in the awkward position of saying, "err, no, I meant this card, not that one." Which shouldn't matter if it was truly random.
Leaving aside my earlier point about whether you should explicitly mention marking the cut, there is the interesting question of how much time is long enough? John B & Vinh both allow about 30 seconds to pass. And they fill the time with information that requires a certain amount of attention from the audience. Alan A only waits about 10 seconds. And he makes one simple statement, that leads straight back to the deck "I'm going to let you choose...using the card you cut to". The problem here, in my opinion, is that "textbook" can easily become just ticking the boxes. Yes, there was some "time misdirection", but I would argue it was not enough. |

I do not remember where I read this about using the CCF, perhaps John Bannon?
After marking the cut, the spectator is asked, top or bottom. If they say top, lift the top half and have them take the TOP card from that half. If they say bottom, lift the cards and have them remove the card from the BOTTOM half. |

Re time misdirection:
I know this will sound heretical, but I'm starting to think sometimes your tm can be zero seconds. You might want to try this experiment with a non-magician. Place deck on table. Point to a spot to the right of the deck and say "Cut about half the cards here." Immediately pick up the other talon in your hands as you make eye contact with them say, "Good. Take a look at the card you picked." On the word "pick" point down to the top of the talon remaining on the table. Have them replace the card and drop the cards in your hand on top. Try it. I'd be curious to hear your results. It worked better than I expected for me.

That IS interesting!
I guess once you have one half of the deck in your hand it is impossible for spectators to know which half is which, so long as they don't actually see you immediately pick up the wrong one. |

Yes it can be used to force the bottom card. After "time management" simply pick up the top half and show the card on the bottom. This is the original bottom card, which you might have glimpsed before the cut.

Roberto Giobbi gave an excellent tip on this move during one of the Sessions convention in Londo, I think it can be found on the Vanishing blog, really worth.
