I would highly recommend the new biographical documentary, "Won't you be my Neighbor." on Netflix. If fact, in my opinion, it should be required viewing for any children's entertainer. Mr. Rogers's style may not be for everyone, but 32 years of success on television proves it works. Its at least worth it understand why it works.
There is no 'one' way, or 'best' way to entertain children. The best way to entertain children is to embrace your own personality and let it show. If it makes you laugh, your audience will laugh. If you honestly feel its important, the audience will pick up on it. Of course, the most important attribute for a entertainer children is to honestly care about them. This comes across in Mr. Rogers the instant you so him. He treats children with the utmost respect, and celebrates each child's uniqueness. As Mr. Rogers famously puts it, "You Are Special." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAktTN0Q-BU The 1-hour and 34 minute documentary is worth the time, and may give you a whole new perspective on what you are attempting to do as a children's entertainer. Honestly, the last 5-minutes gave me a whole new perspective on what I'm trying to do in my life. Toward the end of his life Fred Rodgers would ask you to take 1-minute to think about a person who has helped you. It made me think about how many times I should have helped others instead of helping myself. Isn't that what life is all about? So, one small thing I can do to help others is to recommend this documentary. https://www.netflix.com/title/80231412
