Well I guess all that’s left for me to do now is to ask the question
Is the glass half empty or half full? Some will say full Others will say empty The real answer is, there is no real answer It all depends on your point of view I personally like to see it as a start The hard part of the first pour is over It’s halfway there now And there sits proof that it can happen Keep pouring folks And one day soon your glass will runneth over Tom

From my perspective, Vandecarr probably already had some business experience to be so quickly successful. If he were starting from scratch, (as I perceive the OP is doing), and followed Tom's business program kudos to him!
The questions Danny asked do help bring things into a perspective... Was the showbusiness the soul support to bring the paid off house, living expenses, etc. or was it a partnership in the mundane world with a 40 hour work week which helped with the success? |

I picked up "Marketing for Dummies." I'm generally very happy with the "Dummies," books. They start from an easy spot and take you through what you need to do. "Marketing," not so much it's going into "what do your customers need" and "how can you show your customers you're unique" without giving us any direction as to how to DO these things. "Marketing KIT for Dummies" looked promising, but the CD was missing from the library copy, and the text didn't give any illustrations of what the missing files would look like.
Also, it going into finding places to put your product, presuming your product is a physical thing, and not a service like a show. So, where can I find a "kindergarten" level beginners book on marketing for a SERVICE, not a physical propduct? I haven't gone all six pages of this thread yet. It kind of broke down into "you can't know what you need to know until you know it."

For a book about marketing services specifically, I found
"Book yourself solid" by Michael port to be pretty informative. It's a fairly simple read, the 2nd addition can be gotten for around $5 on ebay. |

Ed, here is one I think you can get in paperback fairly cheap that you may want to check out.
Marketing Your Services: A Step-by-Step Guide for Small Businesses and Professionals by Anthony O. Putman Also, you may want to look at some Seth Godin books. Tom

Tajrung, when you are thinking and visualizing to yourself where do you see yourself ultimately performing? Where do you want to get to? What is the dream?
As I've said before, before you address any of the questions you've asked, you first need to answer some important foundational questions about you, your interests, and your business. This is the first step. It will also help create the plan of what to focus on, where you are going, and creating the plan to get you there. Are restaurants and weddings just a starting point for you or where you desire to end up? Also, is all you do card magic? |

Maybe it's not good answer. I just want to do what I like, I mean magic and earn money by doing it, and for me it doesn't matter what it would be. I don't want to perform for children.
My dream artistic place to perform is probably theater. I also want to do small close-up show for more or less 20-30 people.I sit behind the table people come and sit across the table and I make them laugh and I show them magic. I want to do magic professionally and support my future family from it. I think I should try different kinds of shows to earn money from them and to be able to support my relatives in the future because this is my role as a man. It seems to me that I can realize my artistic visions only when I am financially in a stable place, have a house and a lot of savings. It may be sad but I guess this is the reality I know I can find something interesting in any event where I can perform. Saving money is important to me. I try to invest it somehow and it works out better or worse but knowing that not working full time I might have a little problem with retirement and I have to have savings scares me a little bit so I save as much as I can at the age of 22. |

I understand your thoughts and position. However, I do feel to best achieve your goals and provide for yourself and your family, it is best to have a clear direction to a predetermined destination.
You don't just get into your car, start it, put into gear and go. You have to have an idea of where you want to go to craft a plan and marketing to get you there. Otherwise you will only be doing general marketing that will yield much less results and income. Also having a goal and direction will help you know and understand your true earning potential as not all types of booking and markets pay the same. To be sure I understand, you do not get paid by the restaurant for doing your restaurant performances, correct? Your only income there comes from tips from the customers. Am I understanding this correctly? |

I'll agree with you that it's better to have a plan, and I thought that some marketing book would help me come up with such a plan, and from what I understand now I should just come up with it myself and then advertise it as much as possible. I know I don't have anyone to help me, so I have to do everything myself and earn for my future as if something bad happens. I earn well in this restaurant and working 3 days a week I earn more than the lowest annual national wage of which 3/4 in July and August because there were a lot of people in the restaurant and I didn't go to college then and I could work on Thursdays and Sundays. It's just that I'm already starting to get a little bored with these gigs and I feel that I'm not growing and that's what I care about. That's why now I want to create my personal brand more, because I'm that stranger magician from the restaruation what I used to show magic to some friend
Yes exactly I earn from tips from guests, the truth is that in total I offered it myself, because thanks to this I could get a lot more, The restaurant would not be able to pay me more than 200zl for 3h evening once a week and this is as much as I was able to earn in 2-3h when it was vacations. Due to the fact that I am not paid, I can come when I want and as many days a week as I want, as long as there are no complaints against me, and so far there have not been |

I get what you are saying and can understand why it was a wise move in order to earn more income while having more control of your schedule and finances.
In your area how much competition is there? Are there many magicians in your area? The questions you asked above were great and an excellent starting point, thanks again. I would like to send you a free copy of one of my books. This was taken from a lecture I presented to performers from all over the world in Las Vegas titled Creating A Successful Entertainment Business-The Truths, Misconceptions & Reality Of Entertainment Business. It covers the opportunity of a performing business, turning your performing into a business, getting market-ready and having a marketable performance, why many entertainers fail, the typical "default" approach to business that most performers huse and how to avoid it, how operating an entertainment business is different from conventional business, operating as a professional by my standards (many tell me this is worth the price of the book alone), choosing your performance markets and what markets are available, what is a business operational system, understanding and operating from the customers expectations and perspective, how to determine your pricing and positioning, going to market and getting bookings, types of marketing, sales and selling your performing services, booking yourself vs. working with agents and agencies, the secret weapon every performer and entertainment business show have, and more. This is designed for both beginners as well a experienced performers and is easy to understand and follow. It includes 12 (of my normal 50) foundational questions to use to start your business which I think could be a great help to you. It not only tells you what to do, but also (and equally just as important) what not to do and why. It will help you where you are currently at in your performing and business much more than any marketing book at this point. I will send it to you as an ebook so PM me your email address. Another of my books, 50 Things Working Against And Missing From Most Entertainer’s Businesses will be very helpful once you have the basics in place. |

I don't care to post the website here in a publicly searchable forum as I prefer to keep them from the mass public (and Danny). I do prefer to keep control of who they are made available to as until more recently they were only available to my coaching students, consulting clients, and live event attendees. So anyone PM me if you are interested. |

Glad you have found it helpful and a great starting point. The book answers a lot of question and lays things out easily for you. Now that you have the book I'll be following up with some accompanying info here in the upcoming days if we can stay on topic.
