Can anyone advise which of the Karl Fulves Self Working Card Trick books from Dover has the best items? I plan to give a friend a deck and a Fulves book, but am not sure which book to give.
Yes, I imagine that they all are a mixed bag or that the one with the word Best in the title should be fine. But thank you. |

As you said, it is not easy to pick one book. Each has a few good items along with average and so & so stuff ...
"More Self-Working Card Tricks" has Gemini Twins, which is his most popular item. "Self-Working Close-Up Card magic" has also a few good items, a little more advanced with a few gaffs required as well ... As an alternative, might I suggest one of Roberto Giobbi's Card College Light books? Less tricks, but quality is from good to excellent, very well described and with good suggestions on the presentation of some of the tricks. Little more costly, but better. I'd also suggest the marvellous "Destination Zero" by John Bannon, but that would be really hard to find I'm afraid. If you opt for one of the Fulves books, I'd also suggest you (if possible) to help your friend in understanding and choosing the material. For me, the descriptions and the no-presentations included are no issue, but I always wonder about perfect newbies who read such a book for the first time .. Mark |

In my opinion, the quantity of quality tricks drops after the first two books - Self-Working Card Tricks and More Self-Working Card Tricks
You may want to check out books by Bob Longe. |

Yes, the Bob Longe books are very good, too; small ones and BIG ones.
As a matter-of-fact, anyone just starting out can build an impressive and practical magic library inexpensively by acquiring the soft cover books made available by Dover. Julie |

I'd recommend Scarne on Card Tricks as well.

Hi Supreme. Unless you are adamant about gifting a book, I highly recommend any of The Move Zero DVD/Streams by John Bannon. He does a great job of not only choosing strong effects, but also providing presentation notes that are quite useful.

If you can find it, Magic with Cards: 113 Easy-to-Perform Miracles with an Ordinary Deck of Cards by Frank Garcia and George Schindler, is one of the best books for beginners. The material is self-working, but there's also some good suggested patter and a section on card handling. The 1993 hardback reprint is the best edition to get. Pre-owned copies are available on ebay for a reasonable price.
You can read a digital version of the book at the Internet Archive (the 1975 original edition) if you want to preview the contents before sourcing a copy. I have a great affection for the Karl Fulves books (and the ones written by Bob Longe). But I think they're better suited to magicians with a little more experience. However, it you're trying to provide your friend with a solid introduction to card magic, I think Magic with Cards is a better fit. I'd even recommend it over The Royal Road to Card Magic. Marty P.S. There are hidden gems in all of the Karl Fulves books. I recently shared a variation of a great trick called "Out on Location" from My Best Self-Working Card Tricks via my Ruseletter: Hidden Gems: "Out on Location" by Roy Walton and Karl Fulves |

Since we are off topic, I’ll recommend my favorite book, suitable even for beginners, The Card Magic of Nick Trost. It is a goldmine.
