Never had an issue with the liquid or a cotton ball. It's still the best in my opinion.

As I recall, the Haines formulation, whatever it was, was considered very proprietary by the ladies. If you happened to be on-site when they were making invisible decks etc. they would go to nice, but firm steps to keep you away from the process.

When you mention stick choices, do not leave sex wax out of the options. This is a softer formula, so you can put it on the center of one card, rub it slightly so it becomes pretty much invisible. I AM GIVING AWAY A SECRET HERE--RUBBING IT slightly with a finger (no I will not specify which one--it is your free choice) MAKEs this softer wax pretty much invisible. You can press another card on it secretly and then toss it as a double to the table. For me, sex wax being softer makes hiding it and not having to deal with double stick tape is great. I can have all the security of a card with double stick tape, yet it is pretty much invisible and on one card. stick any other card to it by pressing in the center, where the 1 inch or so circle of rubbed/soft wax is. Then you can toss it and flip it on the table as one card. You can easily separate the cards by pressing anywhere near the edge. I love it this is my dream come true. better to me than any rough n smooth and more reliable--way more than any stick I have bought and tossed. I threw my sticks away. I am not opposed to making my own rough and smooth decks so that they do not stick too much. but for smaller applications or a substitute, this is for me. I hope this helps someone who had to deal with all the sticks that didn't stick right -- like I did.

Haines was my local shop. And looking back, you're correct! They would go into the mystical back room and make the decks. I remember directly asking one time what the substance was and it was responded to as if it was a CIA secret. Still wonder what it was/is...

In my opinion roughing stick is garbage. I just threw 2 sticks away. All it seems like is wax. It doesn't hold anything together. Get the Krylon Matte Finish. I used that to make an invisible deck in 2008 and I have never had to rough it again. Still works perfectly, although, the deck is a lot dirtier today! I'm going to Michaels to get another can of the stuff today.

I tried "Grip Stick" by Penguin Magic on a stack of half-cards. They do stick, but each pair parts a smidge when I count them out one by one. I noticed (in the video instructions) that there's also an "extra hold" Grip Stick (D'oh!) so perhaps I'll try that. Or the Krylon Matte Finish Chalky, which has served me before, but I'm afraid of warping the extra-thin cards.

I am looking for a copy of "Frank Lane's Special Deck and Book," which, as far as I know, explains Lane's ideas with Slick Cards. Even a PDF would be helpful.
