I am to in the field of hypnosis; all of my time over the years has been spent with the pasteboards. I have seen quite a few hypnosis shows, and liked what I saw and so I decided to get a book on it. I chose the encyclopedia of stage hyp, by Ormand Mcgill. I have read a quite big chunk of it in one night, and it is great. I do have a few questions though.
1)Who should I try it on?
2)It says that you have ot do the preliminary waking hypnosis things like, making them fall backwards and forwards first, and then go onto the other things like making it impossible for them to move their legs. However it does not seem to mention the transition from the first tasks to these. How on earth can I be so suggestible as to stop their body from working.
3)regarding transe, it says that I must start gradually, by trying to induce the sleep like state, which it states could be one over a period of 30 mins. Is this not a bit too much for me to be repeating sleep.....
4)When I have seen Darren Brown, he hypnotises them on the spot, literally. Am I right in asuming that he has done a lot of prework with them?

Never apologize for naivete.

I do not perform hypnosis but use it personally. Ormond McGill's book is very comprehensive and will give you a good start. Move on from there! Keep studying, take a certification course and intern under someone's guidance before you do anything professionally.

As for your questions:
1) Speak with your family and close friends. Talk with them about your interest. Don't attempt hypnosis right away but work on the waking suggestions/suggestability tests. Ask if they would like to try something magical with you and that you are not going to hypnotize them. If you perform magic already they are use to you showing them new effects. Do the magnetic fingers then light and heavy arms. Avoid a a sway test until you are comfortable. Then move on from there.

2)As you become comfortable you will develop a feel for doing the tests in a natural progression.

3)Don't worry about this part until you have real experience and training.

4)Having not seen Derren Brown's work I can't comment but I have read other threads here at the Café. I'm sure you'll be able to find them.

Good Luck

In relation to the Derren question, as far as I am aware (and I speak from an external viewpoint and have no inside information, so I may be wrong) he could do several things. He could induce the trance state in preshow, or he could use his amazing instand induction. I have seen him do this instand induction live and it blows you away, and I now use it myself.

As far as doing this instant type induction goes, it is difficult and -damn I hate to sound condisending - one should walk before they run, learn to induce the state, the language patterns and what this weird "Hypnosis" thing actually is as well as its power, then start playing. Other books I would say arew nice are publication available from their website and Nelson's Complete Course in Hypnotism

Hope this helps,

Take your time and learn to do it correctly. You will need literally thousands of hours of practice before you are really good. There is a lot more to inducing a state than just the induction there is a lot of observation and knowing when to do what you do that will make the trance effective. If you want depth and confidence in your abilities you will need to study hard and practice alot.
