Based on personal experience, I have received all the playing cards I've backed and stuff from TCCMagic. PITATA has also successfully delivered their previous project.

I’ve backed 116 projects on kickstarter. Only been burnt 4 times. Unfortunately, two were magic products. But everything i’ve ever backed by TCC has been delivered and I backed Pitata’s first project and everything went well. So this one should be pretty safe.

Yeah, I never do Kickstarter. Why take the chance I wait till things come to market, even if they are a little higher in price.

Had some things not working out with Kickstarter, but received everything I backed with Pitata so far (Whiteboard & Memopad). If someone needs info send me a PM

So they are shipping orders from Kickstarter? I have never tried kickstarter before so I don't know how it works. I pledged a few days ago.

I suspect they use Kickstarter to make this ‘viral’ and to help with cash flow to scale up to a large order. I have the Memopad already (they did an early shipment to prior customers), and I imagine the watches are already semi in production. They ship, not Kickstarter.

Think of Kickstarter like a shopping mall. Lots of different stores with different owners, different employees, different types of items, and different levels of service - all under one roof.
The biggest difference is that your money is paid to Kickstarter, who then gives the funds to the project creator after taking their cut. The project creator is the one responsible to produce/manufacture and then ship your items. Rather than making purchases, you are making a good faith preorder. In most cases you will get the items you pledge for. I have pledged for well over 100 campaigns in the past decade or so, and only have been burned a couple of times. The vast majority of projects come through. When you make a pledge, you choose your items and put your payment info into Kickstarter. If the campaign gets enough pledges and is successful, your card will be charged. If the campaign does not meet its goal by its end date, your card is not charged. Most project creators have done their homework and accurately figured out how much money they need to produce & fulfill. In rare cases they miss the mark, or have some unexpected issue with manufacturing that can cause delays or a lack of fulfillment. It is up to you as a supporter to do your homework on whether you think a campaign looks legitimate, has a reasonable goal, reasonable timeframe for fulfillment, etc. This is harder with first-time creators who have not yet built up a track record. In those cases you need to look at how professionally the campaign is presented. If a campaign has little information, no photos/videos, is poorly written, etc, then it’s probably best to steer clear. It’s quite silly of people to bring up a singular past failed Kickstarter project on any new Kickstarter project if it’s not from the same project creator. That’s like saying you had bad service at the burger place in the food court, so you’re not going to patronize the shoe store 100 feet away because they’re in the same shopping mall. In this particular case, Pitata has a very well-made campaign with lots of photos, videos, and information. They also have run a campaign previously that they delivered on. I don’t personally see any red flags, so I backed as an “early bird”. I didn’t back their earlier campaign, so this will be my first experience with them. Kickstarter as a whole is neither good nor bad. It’s just a platform to offer projects. The success or failure of one project has nothing to do with another, unless it’s from the same project creator. The majority of creators are driven & passionate, and see their projects through. A small percentage may not deliver due to unforeseen circumstances, despite their best intentions. And even fewer still may be trying to grab the cash with no intention of ever delivering the project. It’s up to you as a buyer to check things out and decide if you’re willing to back any particular project. I can say from experience as both a Kickstarter backer & creator that most campaigns go very well, and the most common “worst thing” that happens is a project fulfilling a little bit later than initially expected, which is not usually a big deal. Hope that helps for those who have never backed a project on KS.

The main benefit of kickstarter is the significant discount off of future retail prices. So you r taking a minor risk but getting a40-50% off discount in a lot of cases. Both Pitata and TCC offer fantastic discounts if you back through kickstarter. So it’s definitely worth the risk imo

Do they charge extra for shipping? Maybe I missed it, but I couldn't find any information about shipping on their page.

Sometimes the price difference can be significant, not to mention that there are often other additional goodies thrown in as well. Plus, backers can receive their items long before they are become generally available. This can be enticing to many people. So if you trust the people behind it and they have a successful track record it can be beneficial. I’ve been involved with about a dozen kickstarter projects, not all of them magic related and I’ve never experienced a problem, BUT you have to be aware that it could happen. But in the case of Pitata, I personally am not worried that they won’t deliver so it’s about as safe as you can hope for with a Kickstarter project IMO. But of course time will tell. They will likely overfund their project by so much that it will provide them a lot of cushion should any unforeseen issues arise. |
