I am looking to get out of a standard black tux but I still want to have tails and all the space I need for pockets.... ect. What should I consider and where could I get it?

Ummm
it is a traditional tuxedo, often refered to as a tail-coat. http://www.thehcc.co.uk/images/cpics/c163l.jpg

What's up .. some how this was sent my way .. ouch! The tux is old school .. your too young for that. If you haven't seen what I wear .. check out my site. Most of the time I'm in leather and spandex .. fun stuff in the summer sun. I've often questioned what I wear .. but it's what I do .. it's what people expect when they hear my name. My advise is to wear whats comfortable and looks cool. I never felt good in a suit and tie .. I hate dressing up. I do wear a tailcoat in the show .. but it's covered in rhinestones ... pretty cool.

Pyro,
Those are pictures of tailcoats, to be worn only with white tie (unless you're a head waiter).
The "traditional tuxedo" is a suit-jacket style jacket, created about 90 years ago in Tuxedo, New York, and worn only with a black tie. It is NEVER a tailcoat.

Peter- Sorry. My mistake.(sorry I didn't realize what I said. I was meaning a traditional magicians coat.)
everyone makes mistakes tho. Honestly I don't think I really knew what you could only really wear a tail coat with a white tie? You learn something everyday. But my mistake. All I know is I wear a tail coat with a blue cumberbun(sp?)and I want to move away from the tuxedo thing, into a more casual item.

Chezaday - Your my hero! I wish I could get away with wearing spandex and leather, but its not my style. you are so my hero... lol

Pyro,
Why not try a white shirt with a banded collar and a solid dark color, plain vest and matching pants.
That should look good.

Perform in what your comfortable in. If you are concerned about pulling doves, cards, etc. . . I am doing a full manipulation act with cards, billiard balls, and doves - and I'm doing it in black pants and a tight, short sleeved, black shirt.

One thing that has yet to be mentioned is "THEME". Is there a theme to your magic? If so, does it lend itself to your attire?

If you are doing classical magic then a tux may not be all bad. If you are putting a new spin on your routines or doing something with a storyline, your show may lead you to where you need to be in regards to your clothing.

Too often, we as magicians, just throw things together and it works because of what we do - magic! People cut us a lot of slack. They might not be as inclined to do that if we were actors, musicians or any other type of entertainer. Now take it to another level by creating an atmosphere with music, costume, related props and the like and we now have a mini drama that is far more entertaining, and that is what we do - entertain.

I hope that this helps - good luck.
