I would like to organize my stuff with, for example, labels on shelves for the type of trick. One website I looked at listed these categories:
Stage Magic: Manipulation General Magic Stage Illusions Mentalism Comedy Close-up: Micromagic Cards Parlor Magic ("Comedy" isn't really a type of magic trick, as it could be applied to any type of magic. And "General Magic" just seems to, uh, general.) Is there already a standard magic categorization system, or can someone suggest categories? How do you keep your tricks organized? |

I have mine stored all over the place - Den shelf, bedroom closet, Trunks, Footlockers, storage shed - etc. If a particular show-in their Show Case. Then have a note book with all instructions in ABC order - AND lists, BY - Where stored / Where Bought (Abbotts, Tannens, Bergs, etc) / $Cost when bought / $Worth now (bought many for around $35, in the 50's 60's - now worth $350. ha ha ha ). At 85, 75 in Magic,Vent. - simi retired (????). My Best Wishes to ALL Magi - Ralph

Seems like "type of venue" could be one logical way.

I don't bother to categorize by trick type or performance venue. My props are all in plastic totes or bankers boxes (uniformity of box design means they stack well on shelves). Each box is numbered, and has a label on the front listing the contents of the box in large type.
I also keep a spreadsheet with each effect/prop listed with its corresponding box number. I keep a hardcopy of the listing handy so that I can consult it easily ("Hm, just where did I put 'Astrosphere'? Oh, yeah, box 15.") One exception to the categorization thing: I may reshuffle some of the box contents a little soon, to place my main mentalism routines all in the same box, since there's a lot of overlap of props (envelopes, markers, index cards, etc) and my mentalism repertoire has expanded and become more and more a part of my performances in the last year. Anyway, this is what seems to work for me, in terms of keeping my stuff organized between shows, and enabling me to access props and routines for rehearsal and development.

I'm also curious about what system is used in magic shops, where there are many different items requiring organization.

Most times a "Catalog" is organized by category, my help. I have Abbotts - Tannens - Original 1950's Owen Brothers - they are in a subject, etc, listing. Best to you Ralph
