First of all, did I spell that correctly?

Second, does anyone know of a book where this control is taught?

Third, there is no third. Nothing to see here. Move along.

So that's why my search didn't find anything. I really HAVE been spelling it incorrectly! Thank you for the counsel!

And now that I've finished the complete search, I find no mention of whether there is a book or a video which teaches this spread control.

Nice ring (though I prefer the Gil Kane version)!

Since I'd have to mail order - and there are no descriptions of the books which indicate the spread control - Would you be so kind as to inform me which volume has the H. Spread Control?

Thanks: the ring is de-charged though and I can't find the lantern...

OK one sec I'll look it up: "the Spread cull" appears on page 186 of Vol 1 of Card College. He doesn't actually call it the Hofzinser cull but he makes reference to our man Hofzinser with reference to the cull - it's pretty darned similar, at any rate, and I'm pretty sure it's the same one.

John Carney also talks a bit about this cull in his excellent book "the Book of Secrets". But that book is full of some pretty difficult stuff (much of it above my level) - so if you're just starting out, I'd say Card College is the best way to begin. Actually I personally think it's the best way to begin after you've read and tried to work through Royal Road to Card Magic but that's just an opinion.

You could order an ebook version of Hofzinser's Card Conjuring from Lybrary.com - that might have an explanation in it but not totally sure (and I can't check my ebook version at the moment). Don't really know where else you'd find that book these days.

I used to be into yo yos (i'm assuming you are from your name) but I got golfer's elbow from it so I had to stop.

The most authentic book of today where you can find Hofzinser's Spread Control is "NON PLUS ULTRA: Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser, Zweiter Band" (May 2004) by Magic Christian. The book is written in German language.
Hermetic Press plans to publish an English translation (if I'm informed correctly).

John Carney's "The Book of Secrets - Lessons for progressive conjuring" was mentioned as a source. Don't miss the Carney DVD "The Video of Secrets Volume Two - Lesson for progressive Conjuring" for an excellent explanation.

Dover re-printed it - 7.95 last time I checked. Certainly it will be available used, if not still in Dover's catalog...

You can also learn it off of Daryl's Ambitious Card video of DVD. I love this control, it is very natural, yet so deceptive.

Allan Ackerman: advanced card control video serie, volume 3 (I think) devoted to "controls" He teaches a lot of variations of the "under the spread/convincing" control.

The Hofzinser spread control is a wonderful and relatively easy-to-learn move. Though it would be great to have a full Hofzinser book, you don't need one; the move is taught in nearly all books or DVD/videos that teach card controls.

I'm sure if you check contents, you'll find it on one of Daryl's encyclopedias, in McBride's series on sleights, in Ackerman's series, etc.

Just Google "Hofzinser Spread Control" and I'll bet it'll come up in many lists of book and tape descriptions.

:bikes:

Okay, I just took my own advice and hit Google. Among the first entries:

Michael Ammar teaches it on his "Arcane" notes (from his site.) $10.

Daryl teaches it in Vol. 4 of his Encyclopedia of Card Sleights (and on his Ambitious Card video, as mention above.)

Ackerman teaches 4-5 variations in his Vol. 3 tape on sleights.

So, plenty of options for you.

I Think Derek Dingle explains it in one of his effects in his book The Complete Works of Derek Dingle.I can't quote the page because I don't have it in front of me right this second.I was going through the book a few days ago and I saw it.

And there are a LOT of us who eagerly await that issue!

Not a bad word about Ortiz, (or Perlman)
But try going to the SOURCE!
Hofzinser has a thing or two to teach some of todays performers.

The best descriptions are in these books:
- Card College, where every word is important
- Scams and Fantsies (ORTIZ, in Ultimate Oil and Water): he explains also the mistakes not to do
- Mnemonica (TAMARIZ, p. 356 to 359)
