Chapter 2 The Art of The *******

Up to this point in Chapter 2, the methods explained have allowed the mind reader to do what needs to be done before the Q&A performance begins. This approach works well for certain environments.

Scott was hired to do a series of corporate banquet performances where he would not interact with the audience before the show, and needed to come up with a way for the work that needs to be done to occur real-time, during the show. He wanted to answer audience questions, sealed in envelopes, without opening them.

The first approach Scott devised became known as My Q&A, which he published in 2012. My Q&A is fully explained in this sub-chapter with instructional photographs. The materials needed can be purchased inexpensively at an office supply store and put together in about 20 minutes. Scott explains that while he developed My Q&A for corporate work, he has also used it at psychic home parties and lecture theaters.

***** Question Perfection (pages 137 - 145)

Scott performs a Q&A act for three fundraising gala dinners over three evenings at a four star hotel.

Blank cards and pencils are at each table. Before announcing a 20 min break from the other acts, the MC announces a psychic will be performing shortly and asks those who wish to write a question for the psychic to do so on a card, fold it up and place it in the glass bowl on a table at the front of the stage.

What follows next:

After the short intermission, the MC announces the psychic, who takes center stage. With an empty hand, the psychic reaches into the glass bowl, removes a single folded card, holds it high above his head with his eyes closed. After a few moments, he begins to reveal impressions about the writer and her question. The woman is asked to identify herself and she raises her hand, and goes on to confirm the information the psychic is getting is correct. Her question is answered and she is given a short reading.

Next, a second card is removed from the glass bowl, held high above the psychic's head, and with his eyes closed he again concentrates for several moments before revealing multiple impressions he is getting about the writer and their question. This is repeated several times, with the psychic also calculating the Tarot birth card for each person, answering additional questions not written down, giving short readings for each person, providing lottery numbers and making a written prediction on a pad which turns out to match information on a randomly chosen card from the glass bowl.

The act runs just under 25 minutes, and ends with something special that involves the majority of the audience.

After describing the routine in detail, Scott then explains the workings, which include a mix of several methods creating multiple layers of deception.

Q&A Evolution (pages 155 - 177)

Scott moves his family to Spain, and for 7 years earns his living performing his Q&A act and giving private readings on the Costal del Sol. He discovers the Q&A routines he's used up to this point in his career won't work in this unique environment.

"I needed something new, something that I could work from my pockets, real-time, with no p******, no ******* or ******* and no need to interact with the audience before walking on stage. In short, my Q&A needed to evolve. And so, the Q&A Evolution system was born..." (p. 156)

Scott notes he released an in-depth instant download video of Q&A Evolution in 2017 (currently still available) and this sub-chapter includes the simplified version. The video includes additional variations and bonus routines.

Q&A Evolution uses index cards, some pencils and a clear plastic bag.

"Effect

The Performer removes a small stack of index cards each of which is folded in half once and distributes a dozen or so to members of his audience along with a pencil each.

Those with cards write their name, birth date and a question on the inside of the card and refold them.

The performer demonstrates how to fold them a second time into quarters locking the writing on the inside after which the folded billets are collected in a clear plastic bag.

He gives the bag a good shake, reaches in and removes a single folded billet at his fingertips. Holding it above his head in full view, he calls out a name and asks that person to stand. He then addresses the spectators question, provides an answer *************, calculates the tarot birth card which he writes on the billet and then hands it back to its owner.

This procedure is repeated a further four or five times.

For a climax, the performer writes a prediction on a pad and then has a billet chosen from the bag at random by a member of the audience who holds on to it. He calls out a name and asks that person to stand, picks up on the question she is thinking of and delivers an answer. Finally, he retrieves the chosen billet and after calculating and announcing the tarot birthday card, shows that he had predicted that card on his pad before the billet was even chosen.

The final question is then returned to its owner as the performer throws out readings to the rest of the audience." (p. 157)

The routine and its workings are explained in detail including instructional photos.

This is a fantastic Q&A routine! One that can be put together very quickly for just a few dollars, and performed on stage, cabaret, private parties, or bars and clubs.

A technique you may have read about, one that seems easy when practicing, but which many find difficult or impractical to use during performance.

Scott tells the story of how he tried for months to make it work, but ended up abandoning the technique...only to revisit it years later.

What's in the *****? (pages 190 - 206)

Scott decides to re-create the experience he witnessed with the genuine psychic medium, but as a Q&A act, not connecting with spirits.

The entire act fits in a small box.

Two versions are described and taught. The first, a theatrical display of genuine psychic phenomena Scott used as, "...part of a lecture-style presentation that talked about the history of the tarot, incorporated Tarot and palm readings and was presented at private parties all along the Costa del Sol." (p. 191)

"The second was used as part of a series of intimate mentalism cabaret shows and ran for a very successful Spanish summer season gaining somewhat of a groupie-style fan base with the local British residents." (p. 191)

The basic effect for both versions is the same, with a few minor changes. Participants are given index cards on which they write their name, date of birth and question they would like answered. Each participant then folds their card into quarters and drops it in a box.

"The psychic places the box on his table and puts on a sleep mask blindfold. He reaches in and removes one card at random which he holds to his temple for a moment. With the card still folded he calls out a name and asks the person to identify him/herself. He now answers the question reveals the star sign and calculates the Tarot card associated with the birthdate. In the first version, the folded billet is never opened and is ditched (still folded) in his pocket before he moves on. This procedure is repeated four or five times although you could do more if you wish." (p. 192)

Of the two versions taught, one is more suited for private settings, such as a living room, and the other more suited for cabaret performances.

A variation of the last two approaches, the 'Envelope Q&A' routine uses index cards, pencils and a single large envelope. With this method, no table or box are needed. After writing their question, name and date of birth, each participant folds their index card into quarters and drops it in the envelope. Two ways of secretly accessing the information real-time are taught.

Once again the materials needed are inexpensive and may be put together quickly with minimal preparation.

Stripping it Back (pages 217 - 218)

It's 2013 and Scott has, "...stripped back the majority of the other routines I used regularly, ditching all the specially printed cards, coloured envelopes and store-bought props...in favour of just a stack of double blank cards an elastic band and a sharpie." (p. 217)

He decides to apply this minimalistic thinking to his Q&A as well.

The MMM Q&A (pages 219 - 245)

MMM Q&A was originally published in Scott's book MMM Volume 1 as 'Q&A Simplified' and the full routine and method are detailed here...however, Scott has also added a new variation not published before.

MMM Q&A is a full Q&A routine that uses 30 double blank business cards, a few sharpie markers, an elastic/rubber band and an envelope.

"Effect

The performer displays a stack of approximately thirty double-blank cards secured with an elastic band. He removes the elastic band and approaching the audience hands four or five small bunches of cards to different people along with a sharpie each.

He asks the people with the cards to write their names at the top of the card on the face of the pile, followed by their birth date and a question they’d like answered. Once done they place the card to the back of the pile revealing a new blank face and hand all the cards and the pen to someone behind or at the side of them, who repeats the process. This procedure is repeated until the cards have been used.

Those people left holding the stacks of cards and pens pass them to the front where they are collected and mixed by another audience member. Five people choose a target question each, these are folded in half by those who chose them and dropped into an envelope which is retained by another audience member.

Up until his point, the performer hasn’t touched any of the target questions. He asks the person with the envelope to remove one at random keeping it folded. The performer takes the folded card at his fingertips and holds it above his head. After a moment of concentration, he identifies the author by name and answers the question. Finally, the card is handed back as a souvenir.

This procedure is repeated until all the target questions have been answered and returned to the people who wrote them." (p. 220)

MMM Q&A ends with a climax that involves the entire audience.
