I was watching a a Michael Vincent video this morning, The International Magic video.
His repertoire is mostly of classic effects. I think because of all the new material coming out, a lot of us disregard the old stuff. He performed 'Conus Aces' and 'Slap Aces', amongst other effects. Both are amazing effects that have many different presentation ideas that come to mind. I have always had a soft spot for 'Everywhere and Nowhere',again a classic and the idea of the effect is really magical. What do you think of the old effects? Do you know a gem and which do you perform? I do Everywhere and Nowhere, but I'm gonna start on my Conus Ace routine. I also think that Michael Vincent is one of the, if not the best, all round magical performers in the world. Thanks. kukram

It's like the slogan NBC used last year for Friends and other lineups. "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you"!
I perform many effects that I did back in the 70's. A lot of stuff from Kabbala's, Ibidem, and other magazines. Other things buried in Marlo books. The up-and-coming people in magic don't have a clue. The effects are so old they're new again!

Kukram,
I'd have to disagree with you on this one. I watched the same tape and found it extremely disappointing, having heard a lot about Vincent. I would unhesitatingly say that he is very proficient technically and that some of the tricks were strong. I found, however, his presentations to be out of date, trying way too hard to be "elegant." I might have enjoyed them if I was living in the early 1900s, but in 2004, they just didn't do it for me. As a result, I found it extremely hard to sit through the tape. If you are interested in Everywhere and Nowhere (also one of my favorite plots) check out Under The Influence in my booklet Deviant Practices. |

I haven't seen the International Magic Video, but I have seen Michael perform live at the Magic Castle. He was one of my favorite performers that I have ever seen in the Close Up room. The routines he did were classics, all performed flawlessly, and his presentations were elegant and entertaining.

I have seen Mr. Vincent perform here in Finland and also on his Card artistry of Michael Vincent video. I agree with S.Segal completely. He is one the most flawless magicians in the world today. He does everything with great expertise technically, and he always has engaging presentations. He is simply one of the best and also very nice person.

There can be no doubt that Michael Vincent is an artist with great artistry. He tells you himself! And you only have to watch him perform to understand the true meaning of that word.

I am also currently working on Everywhere and Nowhere. I think I remember from some of Michael's posts in the Café that he regards highly the effects in the platform chapter of RRTCM such as Ladies Looking Glass, etc.

You are right, AaronShields. I was disappointed too. I love old stuff, but his presentations are outdated. I found his personality annoying, like he is patronizing and cares more about the cards than about his audience.
If you want to see how old material should be performed this days, check out Ricky Jay's performances. Nimrod , Israel |

There is no one way of presenting something.
I'm glad he's not copying Ricky Jay for a start! We can't all walk up to people in the real world and say 'Hey man, can I show you something' whilst staring like you're drugged up. I think his style is great; it shows passion. And as for his style being out of date? The majority of magicians aren't aiming for the MTV generation. It's like saying Ricky Jay is out of date! If you had to sell out a theater ala Ricky Jay and you put up an average Joe magician and Michael Vincent, I would bet a pound to a penny Vincent would sell out. Come to think of it, he isn't that much different from Ricky Jay. They both talk about the history of magic and perform classics. Nimrod, you say he cares about the cards more than the audience. I'm sorry, we must be talking about a different Michael Vincent. He generated a lot of warmth to the spectator who was helping. Treated him with respect and made him and the audience come together rather than have a performer and audience barrier which you see all the time. I have learned a heck of a lot from watching his performance. It has given me a lot to think about. kukram P.S. I bet he earns much more money than the majority of us. So he has to be doing something right...ha.

Michael Vincent is the number one magician.
__________ "Micky V. is the number magician" is what I originally put. Someone edited my post. Michael is known by his friends as Micky V., and I am one of his friends. |
