Of Choice and All
I drew up her last will and held her hand long after witnesses had departed – caught by myst’ries of time and wonder. For she had retained as her own reward only a antique silver brush and mirror, and two river pebbles – one white, one black. I stared at them a while with scrambled thoughts, and was surprised to feel her hand squeeze mine, as if she sensed my confusion and fear and wished to assure me all was well. She had a secret to share, not to keep, and her eyes black pools with flashes of light. “Living is about making choices and resolve – to act when others dither or quiver, while looking for someone to blame or shame. Yet, they fear one who is so resolute, and I used those stones to divert their dread, in a pretense that chance guided my fate. I would drop those two stones into a purse and declared the two choices I must face. Then I would gather the thoughts of friend and foe revealed to my intuition and wit, and draw out the stone best suited you see – for the color of these stones was known to me.” You each might think it supernatural to sense a color beyond sight or touch, a seek answers in magic or science. But I would ask what you would do today if you could read another’s mind or heart but choose to help and give it all away?
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst
