I am looking to add a strong magic piece in the show. At times I feel the show is not magical enough. Beside a rabbit production what would you say your strongest effect is. The one where they come up afterwords and say HOW did you do that?

Strong Magic.------LONG
As it has been said by people wiser than me, The real magic is YOU! This was first read in Mr. Goshman's introduction to his book, Magic by Gosh. In search of the perfect prop, routine, reminds me of a poem by Shel Silverstein. (Author of children's books, articles in Playboy, and even old songs by groups such as Dr. Hook.) It was called in search of the Perfect High. In the poem, a person is in search of the perfect substance to get "high". In the end he is willing to swim the seven seas, climb mountains, fight giants, rather than believe the truth that the perfect high is found within himself. As far as things that work for me..... 1. Nigel the Puppet that Rocks and Talks - - Voice Magic/Ventriloquism 2. Ditto on the Torn and restored paper 3. Coin that falls up a. Coin that changes into i.e. library card, orange, cookie.... 4. Coins that end up in spectators closed hands 5. Though widely used I still love the reaction from Professors Night Mare. It is also widely adaptable to different themes, stories and even corporate work. I had a "clown" friend come to see one of my programs last summer, during the International Brotherhood of Magicians 75th Annual convention. (last summer, I was able to do my gigs and attend the "big convention" in Kansas City.(USA) After, I asked her what she thought she replied, It was fun, but not as much magic as I expected". Magicians are intrigued with my muscle pass of a nickle. Lay people want to laugh. Of course getting them to go WOWWWWW! is fun too. 5 minutes with a hankerchief, is replace (by me) with 2 minutes with a chair. My wife has been after me, to use some of my stronger magic in my programs. I have added more to my walk around venues. Flourish Dude, You are the Magic.(thanks for posting and others for responding. Enjoy the journey. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

I understand the magic is you, but still you need to impress everyone in the show. When you say magic people assume there will be magic. If you have a lot of silliness the young group loves it but the older kids say there was not magic. If you had 1 or 2 killer routines that would solve this. In the book perfect paid performances Doc Hillford talks about fulfilling everyone in your audience. That is what I am trying to do, hit every level of expatiation in my audience.

I understand what you're saying and I agree with the inention of having something for everyone to enjoy.
In my opinion you got to have laughs, some silliness (if doing childrens shows), some audience involvement, and one or more strong magic effects. I think I know how you feel though, I am always wanting just one more really good parlor/stage type of effect to "complete" my show. I think I would like to get Cardiographic someday, possibly the chair suspension or the Appearing Bowling Ball at some point. I think all of those are wonderful effects. GlenD

What I feel are the strongest magical effects in my kid show are (in no particular order):
* Linking rings (the adults always ask about it later) * Multiple cut and restore (and sometimes to prof nightmare) rope routine * My own nest of boxes routine, using boxes of my own design and construction. Another big adult fooler, that includes a terrific routine that really gets the kids all excited. Jim

I completely agree with the Gene Anderson Newspaper. It never fails to get a gasp from the audience. It is worth every minute of setup.

20th Century Silks is Strong Magic which always gets the Wows. I also like a good stand up slonge Bunny routine.

A die box effect always has lots of fun but a really strong magical sucker ending that even the adults watching will appreciate.

I get 5-7 minutes of cheering yelling, laughing and magic with my 5-way coloring book, The Book of Imagination. They really do like to see the final picture of the rabbit out of the hat and I milk not seeing it for all its worth until they are at a fever pitch telling me to look. From 3 and up they "visually" see the magic happen at each stage.
I can give anyone interested a great price on the books since I make them. I enjoy using it in every show and you will too. |

I liked the post about "Don't Forget" how powerful vanishing a silk is. That makes a good point.
For awhile I took it out of my program, because "everyone was doing it." Recently I saw an article about using a label to personalize the silk by a spectator and having it end up in i.e. a coin purse. Then you could use the coins to segue (sic??) into a coin routine... Things that I have been doing for a while like Red - Hot Mama/Chicago Opener, can play well with "kids" and adults. Also Ambitious Card,(these days done with a Spidey or Tiger Deck) continues to play well. My one handed (Levand) oil and water plays well to laymen and magicians. Be STRONG! and entertain! Thanks for posting everyone. Harris Deutsch Laughologist
