I have heard this is more of a "card on a string". What do you think? Is it worth buying?

AS for buying it I recommend Jon LeClair's DVD or Video "Who's Afraid of IT". It includes several tricks, accessories and his teaching personna is perfect.
I highly recommend this before investing in the one trick alone.

I used to perform this trick but got sick of it. The set up is too annoying

There's hardly any setup with the original. I used to put the T----D on a pair of glasses "So I can see this next trick" ... I would add the gaffed card to the deck as I got the glasses out of an inside jacket pocket.
My body language with the trick is different tho...
