Getting folks attention was a concern, as it turns out it wasn't a problem.
There were a few who were "doing their own thing", but the good majority I got the interest of immediately. |

As I person with autism, I found following this thread very interesting.
Every person with autism is different, thus every crowd of folks on the spectrum will be different. Knowing your audience in advance is difficult. Adjusting my own show with different elements that fit what I find at a venue has been priceless to me. Harris Autism 1 Hitchhikers 42

I have gotten a surprisingly high amount of spin off work from this
specific gig, just got another booking from it this morning. Not sure why, just putting it out there. I'm not a fan of shows for exposure myself, but if someone reading this is, special needs centers may be something you should consider. |

I have a theory on this. It’s the same reason I get bookings after a terrible children’s performance.
I have shows from time to time where the children are disruptive, rude, and loud. Some of the children seem to have the mind set to purposely be as rude as possible. Then, some of the other kids pick up on this and join in on the abuse. It becomes a contest to see who can be the loudest and most disruptive. The winner gets the respect of all the children at the party. To my surprise, many times the parents will ask me for my card after the show and hire me! My theory is that these parents’ figure if I can handle an audience like that and not lose my composure, I can handle anything. Same with your autism audience. If you can pull of a good show with all the distractions and unexpected things that happen there, you can pull off a good show under any conditions.

Ken, I think you’re right. No, I know for a fact you’re right. I’ve seen it happen many times where a teacher has to quiet down a room of kids all because one child got them started.
No parent wants their child to be bad, but they understand that kids will be kids, and kids will sometimes follow along with other kids. When a parent sees that the speaker/magician also understands this, they don’t feel like their child will be singled out and blamed. They appreciate someone that can carry on in an easygoing manner, and work around an excited group of kids. They also appreciate seeing a special needs child treated the same as others. I think kid show performers are working for two clients at once, the kids and the parents. Either one can be a pain in the butt at times, best to deal with it in an easygoing way. Parents will always see and appreciate that. Tom

Ken, luckily I only get those awful crowds once every 2 or 3 years, but when it happens it makes me want to quit, I try to stay calm, but I'm screaming on the inside. Sometimes I get a nice tip though if the client sees what is happening and feels bad, though a nice tip isn't worth it. The shows I've done for groups on the spectrum have gone pretty well, no problems worth mentioning, at least so far. You just have to accept that there may be disruptions that you wouldn't usually have or accept, and your volunteers may not be able to do as you ask so you go with the flow, and do the show.

Folks:
For those of you who have an interest, I’m submitting a foundation for a public discussion forum on the subject of: PERFORMING MAGIC & MENTALISM FOR PERSONS WITH AUTISM. Why? Because I believe creativity means little if it is not sharable. I wanted to explore making creativity meaningful to special human beings whose needs and wonderful personalities are sometimes overlooked or misunderstood by performers. I am presenting PERFORMING MAGIC & MENTALISM FOR PERSONS WITH AUTISM on both a FACEBOOK page and a YOUTUBE channel. Each features a 7-chapter presentation in both text and video form discussing thoughts about the intricacies for effectively presenting magic and mentalism to audiences in which persons with autism are present. Additionally, there is a video interview with an 18-year old man with autism commenting on what he finds intriguing about magic and mentalism --- as well as what simply doesn’t work for him. Please note that I am not a neurologist, nor am I a superstar in the world of magic. I am only a clumsy amateur mental/magician with a grandson who is on the autism spectrum. My intent is to open a forum in which others can contribute thoughts, suggestions, and debate the subject of how best to engage persons with autism in both magic and mentalism. If you disagree with any of my observations, have alternative experiences, or wish to present supplemental thoughts and observations --- please do! That is the purpose of this initiative. Sorry. That’s not my priority (or capability). Hopefully the content will make up for the amateur videotaping quality. Here is a table of contents for what you’ll find: a.) AN INTERVIEW WITH ROY. THOUGHTS ABOUT MAGIC AND MENTALISM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A PERSON WITH AUTISM. b.) PDF OF FULL MANUSCRIPT: PERFORMING MAGIC AND MENTALISM FOR PERSONS WITH AUTISM. c.) Chapter 1: How And Why This Discussion Exists (video and text). d.) Chapter 2: What Autism Is And What Autism Is Not (video and text). e.) Chapter 3: Why It’s Important To Talk About Performing Magic And Mentalism To Persons With Autism? (video and text). f.) Chapter4: Steps For Preparing To Perform Magic And Mentalism To Persons With Autism. (video and text). g.) Chapter 5: Do Persons With Autism Enjoy Magic And Mentalism? (video and text). h.) Chapter 6: Why Some Persons with Autism Might Understand Magic Tricks Better Than Persons Who Don’t. (video and text). i.) Chapter 7: Next Steps In Performing Magic And Mentalism To Persons With Autism. (video and text). Thank you all. Hopefully some of you will find some of this of value. Mark Bruner |
