I was at my parents visiting the other day, and an uncle I hadn't seen in a while was there, as well as my grandma. My mother laid the old "do a trick for your uncle" line on me several times until I finally caved in and did a few card tricks. I said "ok, I'll do something for you", and my grandma made the best request ever. She said "do the one with the rabbit, I like that one!". As soon as she said this, I hammed it up and said "ok Gram, hang on, I'm pretty sure I brought her with me" as I patted my pockets pretending to look for my bunny. Everyone laughed. You see, several months ago I showed my family my rabbit production that I was putting into my kid's show, so Gram remembered it. The funniest thing was how serious she was, she actually thought I could really produce a rabbit on request!

Hi Danny,

Well if you can make your grandma believe in your magic that says a lot! Probably one of the best compliments there is!

People react to magic differently. Some scream and run away, others are simply flabbergasted. Others will manifest their amazement through laughter.

Several years ago, not long after my apprenticeship, my mother's Great Aunt Alberta came to visit my mother. When she was told that I now performed magic, I asked if she would like to see some? She said yes, so I showed her the Cups & Balls. She enjoyed the routine very much, and started laughing when I began making the balls penetrate the cups. At first I thought she was laughing at me - perhaps I had done something that she had seen. With every production she would first show amazement, then another round of laughter. When I started producing the final loads, she laughed so hard that she literally slid off of the front of the couch and ended up sitting on the floor! Completely unharmed, we had a time getting her back onto the couch as she continued to laugh. She later told me that it was one of the most amazing things she had ever seen, and kept thanking me for performing for her.

This turned out to be the last time that I ever got to see her, (she died a few years later) but I am quite happy that I had been able to bring her such amusement that afternoon. This is one of my all time favorite memories involving my family.
