Technically, this applies to books etc., but would certainly apply to things on the internet. Something weird has been on my mind lately: Has anyone ever read about an effect or even watched a video of it being taught, and thought to themselves, "I bet this guy has never performed this outside of his bathroom mirror."? Anyone else ever think this? Don't get me wrong, it's OK to explore ideas, concepts and general notions... no big deal.
But sometimes, I read some of this stuff and think: This wouldn't work for 10-seconds in the real world. Any thoughts?
His face isn't really this long in-person!

I have a few books in my library that I keep around not because I enjoy them, but rather because they are so bad and yet published. I keep them around for motivation. "If they can publish this polished t**d, then what is my excuse to not write my own book.
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.

In many ways it is one of the worst things that had happened to magic as this is now where newbies go to learn. They don't know good from bad or real performance form just bragging on that "I know the secret and now you can too." I have seen magicians learn things wrong, steal patter and scripting, and of course worse of all reveal and expose in so many videos. Most have never performed. Heck most here on the Café have never performed, yet claim to have been in magic for decades. Magic has no gatekeeper or qualifying entity, and today it shows more than ever and magic has really suffered from this. The interest these days is to become seen and known on youtube and the internet or from a simple pdf they have made rather than being a performer. No, it is not just you. |

I believe the issue is that a lot of the folks releasing these effects make their income from either teaching
magic on the Internet, or selling tricks, performing in front of folks isn't something a lot, if not most of them have much experience with. These effects tend to work decently in front of a camera, unfortunately, most folks buying these don't perform for instagram or youtube and ends up with an effect that's not useful in the real world. Often, these effects are marketed as useful for live audiences, when anyone who has performed for real people know it's useless, if the creators can't tell the difference, it would be nice is the selling platforms classified them better. Of course, I would advise they don't, it's not in their financial interest. |

I can assure you most aren't even making a decent income from any of this. Even very well-established guys rarely make a significant income from books, dvds, videos, etc.

Meh. Just more people wanting to be an "influencer" or online celebrity and get a following and clicks.
But if people keep clicking on the videos and links, they'll just keep doing it.
