Hi all,
I'm thinking of making a silk fountain. This is my first attempt, therefore I would like to know whether is it difficult to make one, e.g., does it requires special tools and equipment, etc.? I'm also thinking of getting silk fountain DVD by Duane Laflin. Any advice is greatly appreciated. P.S. Is it difficult to make the final load gimmick? I would like to produce a 36-inch silk for the finale. Thanks.

I recommend McBride magic on stage vol.3.
Jeff teaches silk fountain, production of the ball, and you get a bunch more on the video. |

Harry,
The production problems associated with the "ball" are often of our own making. Remember that a silk fountain can be ANY size you want to make it. Commercial size has a lot to do with what can be sold rather than what is needed. (That is no basis for building your act.) A small one that I use (12 silks 12-18") is about the size of a sponge clown nose. I can actually steal it in the process of doing the sponge ball to cube. A ball about the size of a grape fruit, I can steal with a 24" silk as a hanging load behind a table or my assistant. An alternative is to give her the dove, keep the silk but steal the load from her in the process. When all else fails, the trusty square circle will let you produce a silk fountain large enough that you will need a laundry basket to get the silks off stage. To me, with the larger load, I would rather produce the same number of larger silks than just more small ones. (Of course I would also rather produce 25-40 18 to 24" silks than the same or fewer number of tiny 12" silks.) On stage a 24" silk is not a large silk (my favorite size) and an 18" silk is about as small as I think should ever be used on stage. The problem with 36" silks is that they are longer than a man's arm and it takes two hands to show them properly. For King Kong, no problem! Scheme! Bob Magic By Sander |

Yes, it is possible to load a 5ft appearing pole. I use 50 spring bills from mine and will add a super flasher to flash a little fire with confetti burst. Fool around with it and you'll find many loads: doves, rabbit, flower bouquets, appearing canes, appearing lit candle, etc.

Get the Scot Alexander dvd with Color Sense on it. Great routine. Shows how to make the fountain, cheap. Great misdirection for the steal. It was one of my favorite routines on the two awesome dvds. Also, I've seen Duane several times and his fountains are always really nice.

This is a great thread I have been considering adding a silk fountain to my show and now I think that I will. I like the square circle idea.

If you want to purchase the finest silk fountain available get it from P & A silks. Peter White & Co. I've used several of his items thousands of times and they hold up like iron. I've used Peter's Ribbons to dove probably 2000 times over the years and it's still in tip top shape.
I give P & A Silks 5 stars!

I would pick up Paul's lecture on tape. I just watched it again the other day and realized again just how good it is.

If you want a cheaper alternative, turn to Scott Alexander's, sense of color routine. I like this method a lot and it is much more affordable. You can find it in the 10 O'clock show DVD under the routine, A sense of color. You can buy this DVD through Bob Kohler or from your favorite magic dealer.

Jay Scott Berry has tips on fountains using diamond cut silks. He also has tips on using TTs to help loading the fountain into place.

Scott Alexander's Sense of Color routine is an excellent silk color change wotuien that ends in a fountain of silks production. However, his fountain of silks production does not have " finale" of producing a much larger silk or other item ie. candle, dove, etc.
Should a fountain of silks production always have a larger (36") silk or other item as a final production? Thank you very much. Michael

I think a fountain needs a finish. It can be almost anything you can fit in it or steal into it. I have seen livestock, cracker jack boxes, big silks, bouquets, and all kinds of stuff.
The fountain by itself is a beautiful, visual effect but I feel it needs a climax at the end to get the applause started.

I second Richard's opinion because the silk fountain by itself ends just about literally "flat". Each silk "blossoming" out is already drawing attention to the center of the fountain and to have it stop with the last silk simply unfolding is anticlimatic. I think the silk fountain just about calls for something bigger than itself to be sprung forth.

I agree that a kicker ending will make it even stronger, and the strong part of the silk fountain is that it is so "eye catching" and visual so you can easily grab a wine bottle, glass of juice or something else from you back pocket or belt holder with the other hand and load it under the fountain just when the last silk appears. If you use fairly large silks there is plenty of cover.
