Just did a show for an end of term party at a local village school after school club. 40 kids ranging from 4 - 11 years old.
I use the birthday candles silks in my show and yesterday happened to be my birthday (it's true!) and so I introduced it as such. The organisers knew it was my birthday as I made a comment when they initially booked me. All of these kids we BRILLIANT! They shouted in the right places, were quiet in the right places and even the hecklers were just having fun! At the end of the show one of the eldest boys led them in giving me three cheers and then they started singing Happy Birthday Stu Di Doo! I could have cried it was a beautiful moment. As I was about to pack up one of the kids asked if I could sign the colouring in picture I pass to everyone, I said "do you want my autograph?" after he replied "yes please!" they all wanted one!! I felt like a pop star / film star for five minutes signing all these sheets. Anyway sorry to ramble but I am on such a high I don't think anything could have gone better! That's why as the title says "I love this business!" Now I just need to increase my bookings to take me full time! All the best to you all Stu Di Doo |

It is great isn't it! I have a similar experience from last week, my b-day was on thursday the 8th, I was booked at a library for a magic class........class went awesome, after a young girl came up to me and handed me a piece of folded paper, I opened it and it was a b-day card she made on the computer for me, the librarian told the other kids what it was and they all started clapping it was the best b-day gift ever! it makes those shows that don't go so great not importsant

Yes this is a fun business. Although I take the business seriously, I take myself lightly.
In about 30 minutes I will share with 200 folks at a Library Program. Currently I am on their computer checking this site and my emails. The puppets are doing their warm ups.... Kids are starting to arrive and smile and ..... Enjoy the process and the sharing..... Harris

I love this business too! I often say, "There's nothing like seeing the magic in a childs eyes". To me, their reactions are magical moments.

On one of my birthdays a few years ago, we were doing a large show in a church, and the pastor got all 200 children and parents in the audience to sing Happy Birthday to me! It was before the show. What a way to start an evening!
My wife and I perform together, and tomorrow is our 10th Wedding Anniversary. We have show for a group tomorrow (coincidently, another church group). I wonder if they will do anything special for us? Life is great when you show love to your audiences, and it is reciprocated! - Donald.

Congratulations Donald! (our 25th next January!!)
Stu-di-doo, - is it going to be difficult turning full time in the Lake District, or are you in easy reach of the M6 Motorway. If so then North Manchester can hold some quite good rewards. Large Jewish Community around Whitefield. We also found years ago when we worked this area, that Bury and Bolton quite good on the whole. |

One of the best lines about being in the business came from David Lettermen a few weeks ago.
He quipped after a good audience response.... "I used to drink (alcohol) to feel this way". It looks like the library will have me back next year for the library reading program's new theme. In our area it looks like it will be FANTASY.... Harris

Well done mate, in this business you get nightmare shows, bad shows, good shows, great shows, brilliant shows and fantastic shows. When the fantastic ones come along you just float home, it's a great feeling.
Wouldn't it be good if we knew which way a show was going to go when the booker phoned, then we'd only have top do the good to fantastic shows.
Yours Funfully

Once a special school (physically handicapped) got wind of my Birthday and I got sang too. I usually am quite quick when performing and always have a funny remark for most occasions. That time it was so touching all I could do was stand there and grin like a fool.
I too love this business. I can't ever imagine doing something else or even considering wanting to get into another line of work as long as I live. Happy Birthday, Stu. Sounds like you had a good one . George |

This was a great and heartwarming comment. I too love magic. Did a bit of close-up stuff for a few friends yesterday and one of them was like, I now *believe* in magic
God that makes you feel good!

Signing autographs after a program is very interesting.
After a verbal reaction to one of my effects I quipped to the audience(an myself) hmm so this is what it is like to be a "rock star". Harris

Stu di doo,
Congrats. That is always such a great feeling when you have the perfect show, perfect audience and everything just seems to go so well. It makes you feel good about yourself and you tend to feed off of the positive energy. In regards to getting more bookings, I would reccomend checking out thedean.net if you have not already done so. It is a great way to get started in and to learn the art of marketing your magic. Many magicians have a great show or a great act. The problem is, that no matter how good you are, if the people do not know about you, you simply will not be working for long. This is why it is essential that you learn the business side of show business. There is a lot to learn, but it is fun, fascinating and can be really rewarding if you apply yourself and apply the things that you learn. Your coloring flyers is certainly a good start. Make sure your information is on them and that they can contact you when they take it home and show mom and dad. Kyle

Thanks for all those kid words everyone. Yes it was a great show and one I'll always remember I think. Just have to stop boring people with how great it felt!!
Just did another show today for a village fun day kept making loads of mistakes but apparently noone noticed. I felt bad about the show but everyone else thought it was great. Ace: I only know of about three other entertainers in cumbria and only two are full time. I received some advice from a guy who retired from the business 5 years ago and was based 20 miles from me and he was doing 10-15 birthday parties a week plus corporate work as well! My name is spreading far as I was in a nightclub last week talking to a friend who introduced me to two of her friends as "Stuart" immediately they both shouted "Stu Di Doo" they had seen my flyers and posters around the town with my caricature! With regards to the M6 I live at Penrith some 500 yards from Jn 40 of the M6 and also the A66 to the North East! Kyle: I did look at thedean.net a while ago and will remind myself again shortly. It was at the early stages when I was trying to learn everything at once whereas now I feel ready to really market my show! Again thanks to all for the birthday greetings, may all your shows be great ones! Stu Di Doo |
