I have found that wands are pretty essential in any good cups and balls routine. I use the Pheonix cups, and Iron Wood wand that comes with them is pretty good, but I still use the best wand available, in my opinion at least...the Mercury Wand.

I've always loved wands. Coin wands, slush wands, silly wands, serious wands, metal wands, wood wands, crystal wands......well....you get the idea....I just like wands. I've been collecting wands for years and my favorite is still the double fire wand. Nothing says 'wizard' more than being able to point your wand and shoot a fireball 15-20 feet across the stage......and then do it again, maybe with a flashpot or two going off for good measure ( think Wizard of Oz ). Of course only with a fire extinguisher and city permit at the ready. The shapes, sizes, and materials may change, but the theatrical significance remains. The power is in a wave of the wand.

My wand was made by Tabman. I use it every show, produceing it from a small paper envelope or purse frame. the color is right for me. a brown wood with brass tips. He says it is perfectly balanced, and I believe him. But I cant do a wand spin worth crap.

Didn't I make that wand for you a bunch of years ago Scott?? It's been a long time, glad to see you here at the Café. I probably make at least one wand almost every day and I thumb spin every one I make before sending them out. -=tabman

It's always kind of funny to see old threads get new life.
The only wand I have is a cheap plastic one that came with the Mark Wilson course years and years ago, so I don't really use it. If I were to get one, I'd agree with Derek and get a fire wand, now that would be cool. Second option, hmm... maybe a crystal one. If wands are supposed to be devices that help to focus and channel a magician's power, then I think, visually, they should look the part. Of course I know what they are really for, but I mean in the context of the illusion. I think I'd personally look for something really unique, different than wood - unless it shoots flames of course. ;-) Anyone know of an acrylic wand that shoots fire or glows on demand ?
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

I still use wands for various gags, as well as my Flipstick routine. I still use a fiberglass wand that I bought about 26 years ago - the laser foil still looks great on it.
I'd like to find a metal wand that's impossible to bend by hand. It would have to be 12" long and about 1/2" in diameter. I'm not sure if brass would work or not. I like to have the wand examined in the course of my routine - some idiots have actually tried to see if they could snap the wand in two, rather than trying to find out if it collapses. No one has been able to damage the fiberglass wand, but I'd like something even stronger. Has anyone owned a really tough metal wand like this? |

I use a wand for several things - Ring on Wand, cups and balls and, one of my favorites, Fl!pstick.
Sometines, I also use it to do a rubberband penetration, ala CMH, depending on the circumstances and also a bit where a wedding ring moves against gravity using IT. Lee Darrow, C.H.
