Does anyone know who invented this principle? Are there any other tricks that use it?

It's generally attributed to Sam Loyd, who published (and patented) it in 1896.

He subsequently produced many versions of the puzzle, as have others over the years.
The Deceptionary :: Elegant, Literate, Contemporary Mentalism ... and More :: (order "Calculated Thoughts" from Vanishing Inc.)
