Hey, folks! I was wondering if anyone has typed instructions for any Presley Guitar coin gaffs from the 1970s that they would be willing to share. The trick doesn't matter. I have become friends with the woman who wrote them, and she has been entertaining me with stories of Presley dictating instructions in his own whacky way. She's 78 years old and hasn't seen her work on these since that time.

If anyone is willing to scan something and send it to me as a PDF, it would be greatly appreciated. I know that she would get a kick out of it. Thanks!

Did she work on the writeup for the CSB patent?

It's here:

I'm sure it's quite possible and I thank you for that. What I was hoping for was a copy of the typewritten instruction sheet that came with the items that one would order from Pressley. Back in those days, you would get a folded-up page or two of photocopied info and the item in a plastic bag. Far from the slick packaging that we have become used to with today's magic. She did tell me that all the ones she worked on were done with a beat-up manual typewriter.

Again, thank you for your response. I'm going to enjoy reading it, but I have to wonder why he bothered to patent it. The ownership of magic has never been respected and knock-offs are likely far more common than the real items. I would think that anyone with an inventive mind who wants to create magic props would be best off accepting that fact. Otherwise, it could drive you nuts.

There were knock offs at the time but not nearly as bad as today with what China cranks out.

I don't know if it helped or not. There were certainly other CSB sets produced before the patent expired - SASCO, Sterling, etc.
It would be interesting to know if he got any license fees or other payments from them.
I've heard that Johnson - whose early CSB sets looked just like those in the patent drawing - originally helped him make sets then just went off on their own. :/

I had heard that Johnson just stole the whole thing. Who knows who to believe? Rights in magic can get pretty muddy. The only thing we can be sure of is that the stuff from China (excepting a few legit magic creators) is both fake and almost universally inferior.

As I understand it, Pressley had his initials stamped into the molds he used on things like CSB. When Johnson "stole" the manufacturing, they left the initials in error. If true, that's pretty funny if you can get past the disgust over the practice. Are you a coin guy? I've never had an interest in it, other than to watch it done well. It really doesn't matter if we understand slights and sh**ls; it can be pretty amazing when done right!

Cheers!

Well in this case it's fairly clear - he had a patent on it.

As for the Chinese symbols on his original sets (as seen in the patent) and the early Johnson coins, they mean Fox and Hare but may have been selected and stylized to look more like like a P and a G.

The effect is called "Guitar's Copper, Brass & Silver Transposition" I knew Pressley very well. I remember when Sam LaPorte began selling CBS. Pressley hired a Lawyer and quickly figured out that it would cost more to sue than the lawsuit would bring. MJE - the initials of the woman who you know wouldn't happen to be K W, would it?

MJE - The typewriter was an old IBM Selectric. Which instructions would you like to see?

Hi, Jerry!

Anything, really. Doesn't matter at all. That would be great if you've got a page you can scan. Thanks!!

Sorry, I just noticed your question. No, her name is Judy but I don’t know what her last name was back then. She is now 78.
