I am going to get a wand and am not sure the best quality one to get.
I want it to be the black sophisticated type with aluminium tips. Ammar has one and at the Earth's Largest Magic Shop there is a wand called the Ultimate wand recommended by Sisti and Brad Burt. Or are there others? Which do you recommend. Thanks Kukram Check the link for the 'Ultimate wand'

I have a "Mercury Wand" by Ammar. It is heavy and looks like you have described. It is good for spins. However, I have always used a dowl or non-tapered drumstick to work as my wand. I use that because I typically use the wand for the cups and balls when busking. However, when I have performed in a more intimate setting, I use the Mercury Wand.

There is a new wand on the market called the GoldenRod. It is made of brass with the same kind of polyolefin grip as the Mercury wand. It is a bit heavier, and is perfect for spinning. It comes in two sizes. Hocus Pocus will have these in about a week.

The one at penguin magic looks pretty good, but I'm happy with my mercury wand.

You should buy a wand you are comfortable with.
Do you want it to do spins or just to look good or what? I have a whole collection of wands and find that the comfort factor is what is impoortant. You can perform with a plastic kids wand depending on what you want to do with it. The mercury wand will have a tendency to dent your cups depending on your routine your using it with. Brass tips with rounded ends seems to be the best. I also like the Collectors workshop wand as well but then I can perform with a stick if I have to. There are a lot of choices out there. Hope that helps, DK |

Mercury wand that Ammar uses is balanced and good to work with.

If you can afford it...I'd look into the Joe Porper wands!

Porper's wands are unreal, check at http://www.porperoriginals.com ... also Thomas Wayne makes great wands.

I will repeat one of my messages here.
For fun, I talk about the Los Angeles "street" wands... easy to make. Just go to Loews and buy a foot long 1/2-inch dowel, then go out on the street and pick up a couple of 32-calibre bullet shells and slip them over the ends of the dowel. Polish 'em up and you have a nice brass-tipped wand with some authority! :kermit:

If you use a 1/2 inch dowel, a 32 calibre shell won't fit over the end. A 45 calibre shell will come closer. A 50 calibre shell will fit. The problem is finding one. Most 50 cal shells are made for 50 cal rifles and have a huge powder chamber. So you probably need a .50 casull revolver shell or a .50 desert eagle shell. Most folks who shoot these at gun ranges police up their brass so they can re-load.
Nevertheless, it's a good plan. Willard the Wizard used a wand like that for many years. On a sadder note: the dowels that have been coming to your local lumber yard are not up to the standard that they have been in previous years. Most of them have horribly rough surfaces and will require a lot of sanding and filling to make them useable.

If you want a dowel (sort of) that does work, find a local muzzle loading shop (probably mail order for most people) and look for ramrods. They are usually made of hickory and are very strong. Depending on caliber, they are usually smaller than .5" as they have to fit down the bores of .50 caliber rifles.
You can usually also find nice brass end caps for these while you're there as well.

Funny, this thread is called the best wand. And wands like a Ammars Mercury wand are compared with Thomas Wayne's and Joe Porper's. Which is to me like comparing styrofoam cups with Sherwood cups...ah well, Johnson's (let's not exaggerate;-)
What is the best wand? completely counts on what you want from it. I use a Thomas Wayne wand which is the best I like in appearance, in balance and what I can afford. But I bet it will break when used as a thumper, so then it sucks! What do you want it for, what kind of material do you like, what is your budget, what venues do you perform? The answers on these question may point out what might be the best choice for you. Not what is the best wand. The best wands after all, are made by Olivander in Diagon Alley (London)

We do need to bear in mind that the original post specified a wand that was basically like a Mercury Wand.
However, I agree about the Thomas Wayne wands. There is a photo of mine on page 69 of the July 2004 issue of MAGIC. I had an opportunity to see many of the historical wands in the MAGIC magazine article about 7 years ago. The late Mike Longworth was the nephew of the late David Price who was the owner of the Egyptian Hall Museum. I was a friend of Mike's and he offered to take me by his uncle's house to see the collection. So, while I was at a bluegrass convention in Nashville, I met up with Mike and he took me over there. One of the wands in the collection belonged to Robert-Houdin. I remember the Willard wand as well. So the article had a bit of nostalgia for me, as well as a bit of pride in seeing one of my own possessions in the article. For use with my Sherwood cups, I had James Riser make a special wand for me. It is ebony with silver rings. You can see it in the Cups and Balls Museum on the Wands page. Just go to http://www.cupsandballsmuseum.com and click on the link to the wands.

While we're discussing wands, does anyone have any thoughts (meaning do you own one?) on Magic Makers 2-piece wood & brass wands?

Yes, I have a couple of them. They are decent wands for the money. Most of the time they are given away as premiums, such as when Penguin gave them as a premium for purchasing $99 worth of magic or when L&L gave them away. They retail for about $15.00.
The weight is decent, and they screw together well. As with any other two-piece wand, I wouldn't use them as a thumper, because it could damage the wand.

The best wand I've ever seen was one of Joe Porpers.
It was made of Snakewood. It was on ebay one day.

Joe's wands are really nice. I got a couple of them with various cups sets that I have. I also have one that was made as a "standalone." I sure like that ivory one that is in the MAGIC magazine article, though!
