Can anyone recommend a good source of fanning deck routines? Particularly one using Abott's Zinab fanning deck. Thanks.

What's a fanning deck routine? Is it just a routine where you fan a lot or what is it about?

What is a fanning deck routine?
A fan is just a flourish for the spectator to pick a card, it's not a trick and certainly not a routine!

The McBride card manipulation video series (especially volume 2) contains instructions for several fans with a fanning deck. Bill Tarr's book, "Now You See It, Now You Don't" also has fanning deck tips, and I'm sure there are other resources available. How you put them together should depend on your own artistic sense. You'll want something that expresses YOU.

The Chavez course covers a lot of this material if memory serves.

Best,

This is a rather uninformed comment. Many great magicians have card fanning routines. Check out Tom Osbourne

Shimada has a routine on his tapes from Stevens'.
Also, a book from Joe Casarri has a flag fanning routine he did on Cruise ship. His book is great.

To add a bit more info as to what a fanning routine can be: imagine the performer produces a fan and tosses it into a hat. Suddenly another fan appears in his hand. Into the hat they go, and others appear, into the hat, and another, into the hat. Now both hands are producing fans, one, two, three. Then a red fan is produced, it suddenly changes to yellow. And so on.

There are tons of effects you can do with fans besides pick a card from them.

Magic can be performed with ANYTHING. Do not limit yourself by thinking "you can't do magic with THAT!" Seek out things NOT often used magically and find a use for them. Caution: exceptionally large items such as houses and 10-ton trucks should not be lifted alone. Smile

The Jeff McBride, "Art of Card Manipulation" series will help you learn some of the building blocks (and there are many other sources both on video and in print). WARNING: Lots of practice required.

My fanning routine consists of three parts
1. Color changing
2. Homing Fan with color change kicker
3. Diminishing Fan with McBride's Double Jumbo Fan Finale

I am working on a method to make the fans grow again. But cannot open the enormous fan fast enough.

The original question here was not how to fan a deck of cards but rather asking help with a fanning deck like Abbott's Zinab. As several members have already said, there are multiple fanning routines but the Zinab deck is designed in such a way to make color changes and designs while fanning the cards. the references given will help develop an act and Zinab deck can make it a pretty routine.
