If you have a lot of tapes you can buy a machine to do this for you -- just search Amazon or Best Buy. But Walmart, Best Buy, Costco and other stores plus online services can do it for you. There are also lots of articles like this one:

About 10 years ago I bought some software for this. Installed the software, connected my VCR to the computer which created a file. Then made a DVD out of the file.
The initial learning curve seemed a little intimidating, but like most everything, after awhile the process became a piece of cake (though copying all those VHS and camcorder tapes took awhile!). Seems like getting one of those combo recorders is a great idea. I would be a little nervous sending off my old materials in the mail.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".
