It depends on the performer. With some, it is when you put them away.
If you choreograph it carefully, the routine will build to the final loads. The last load should get the biggest reaction.

Mr Palmer,
That is a very valid point, I must confess I got a chuckle out of the opening sentence. I like the way you think. |

Thought somebody would get a laugh out of that. I hope it makes a few people think, though.

The bit toward the beginning of the Vernon routine, where each ball is taken off the top of a cup and vanished... gets good reactions.

My favorite part is when I put them away. I always feel like I'm going to screw up w/ these. I have never felt comfortable with coins or cups and balls. I'm a card man...

All the more reason to dive right in.
Seriously, I'm not a specialist. I learn things as I need them. But I started learning basics of several different aspects of sleight of hand early on, and it has helped me with all the others. If you start working on coins, you will find that your work with other small objects also improves. J.B. Bobo, himself, told me that back in 1960. I have never forgotten it! (Darn, I'm getting old!)

I find the whole routine is strong, and it, as it should, builds to a climax. (Especially my Indian version).

I think the appearance of a ball on top of one of the cups is the most magical.

I really like the cup thru cup, it is fast makes noise and is easy to follow. Sure some spectators might get it after a while but it is still quite a shock. Also, if you can do it well the striking vanish is amazing.

Cups and Balls is one of my best. I do a three cups routine.
I always get a strong reaction when the three small balls travel first time under the cups. The passing of cup through cup is always fun. Some of my spectators are badly deceived some are not. In my routine the penetration sequence has the only objective to convince the audience about the emptiness of the cups. The final load gives the biggest reaction. I produce three 2.5 inches solid balls, the spectator grab immediately to test their conditions. The large balls are made of cork. All my balls have a crocheted surface of red wool. Everything is topped by the production of the fourth ball, which ends the routine. |

Brett Sherwood had some interesting new load balls at his booth at the IBM Convention. They are large balls which are covered with a nice yarn with a metallic thread woven through it. They come in red or blue. I'm hoping he will have some fairly soon, because they have a very striking appearance.

Bill,
I make these as well except out of felt. They glisten in the sunlight. I also do this with the smaller balls as well. It's great for outdoors in the sun, especially. I'll try to take some fotos. Frank

I open my routine with a version of the Charlie Miller phase and people react well to it.

I get a good reaction at the finish of the elevator sequence, When all three balls roll out from beneath the bottom cup. This is similar to Gazzo's "two on the bottom, one on top " sequence.
As James mentioned, the Charlie Miller phase also gets a good reaction, especially the finish where the ball penetrates the bottom cup that was sitting n the table the whole time. |

I agree with Bill, I get the best reaction when I put them away. I tend to play with my balls to much in my hands and it can make people lose interest in my performance.

Man! I'm not going to touch that line, especially after what Johnny Carson told Arnold Palmer's wife on the tonight show!
