I’m new to Silk Magic and was wondering what are some useful Silk Magic gimmicks that a magician should purchase to use in Silk Magic?
Is a Palmo and Dye Tube really useful? What about a crystal cylinder? Is that a useful silk Magic gimmick or a waste of money? Are there any other useful gimmicks that a Silk magician should consider?

A box of Tee pins and paint them flat black, if that is the color of your costume.
While you are painting pins, painting a package of very small safety pins black is a good idea too. I Use them sometimes to make sure I have found the corner I want. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

That's a good idea Bob. You have a lot of knowledge about magic. I liked your previous post about buying silks in pairs. What a great idea!!
The only gimmick that I use now with silks is a TT, What do you silk magicians think about silk vanishing balls, palmos, dye tubes, mirrored cylinders, and crystal cylinders? Do you really use them that much? Are they worth buying? Are their some other silk gimmicks that I should consider buying?

First you must decide what the effect is you want to accomplish. Barehanded color changes will need dye tubes or palmo gimmicks. Larger apparatus such as Crystal silk cylinders are useful to produce larger silks.
So lets lock in what you want to do then we can all advise you better on what gimmicks you may or may not need.

Hugmagic, I am going to buy Rices' Encyclopedia of Silk Magic later this year. These should help me learn more about silk magic.
I know very little about silk magic but right now I'm just curious as to what silk gimmicks are out there and what they do. I know that there are several types of silk tubes like crystal cylinders. I'm not really sure of their purpose yet. I'd like to be able to perform the major silk routines but I am not sure of which silk gimmicks or gaffs I should be thinking about buying. Right now I'm buying some silks in different colors and sizes. I don't know what silk gimmicks I should buy nor do I know what the major silk effects are.

Gerard, I'm not sure there are "major" silk effects. Most fall into one of several categories. Appearances, vanishes, color changes and transpostions. Not all are accomplished with gimmicks and gaffs.
Richard is correct, you need to decide what you want to do and then work on how to do it. Rice's encyclopedia is probably the authority on silk magic. I try to make my magic fun. Part of that fun is to think about what I want to do, and then try to work out a way to do it. Too many magicians just pick up the standard effect and perform it exactly as the instructions say to do. None of us are going to expose gimmicks and gaffs here in the open forum but you can open any magic catalogue, or go to an on line site and find tons of effects with silks that may or may not involve gimmicks but will be exactly what you are looking for. Be creative and don't become a clone of other magicians.

Gerard,
If you are serious about silk magic, there are several items you SHOULD own...you asked, "Is a Palmo and Dye Tube really useful?" ABSOLUTELY! My silk act lasted FIFTEEN years, using those, and a Kirkendall Finger Reel! Nothing else! Along with Rice's Encyclopedias HERE, consider Thru The Dye Tube, By Rice HERE, a great price at nine bucks! My Palmo is my favorite. That and two silks of contrasting colors (Red & Green), and I'll show you a CLEAN color change, right before your eyes! Sure hope this helps...good luck! Doug |

Thank you Bob, hugmagic, Dave, and Dougini for your replies.
I am a magician was not trying to expose any silk gimmicks or gaffs. I would never do that. I was just trying find out if some of the silk magic accessories I see on the online magic stores were useful in silk magic. I've never seen a magician doing silk magic use either a mirror tube or a crystal tube. I probably should have used the word accessories instead of gimmicks or gaffs. I'm sorry. I definitely need to pick up Rice's Silk Encyclopedias because I don’t know enough about silk magic. Thank you everybody for you replies and advice.

Gerard1973,
One of the real benefits of silk magic is the relative lack of gimmicks and expensive one-use tricks. It does take study, practice and tons of silks. When it comes to learning silk magic, the saying "More is caught than taught" has its place. See a lot of it! Enjoy! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Anybody have any success with keeping the Nielsen change gimmick quiet? I wanted to do the change quickly as a throw away part of a gold ball routine. The silk changes, so ball changes. But have not been able to quiet the mechanism.

Jay Scott Berry has some neat little gimmicks worth checking out. I like the Vortex silk appearance and use it in all of my shows. If done properly, it is a real fooler.
Good luck. |

Gerard1973,
If manipulation is your thing, never rule out the benefits of rubberbands or a black pin and a piece of thread. Even a gem clip can make you a star! Enjoy! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I agree with magician81, a hank ball, and some of Laflin's "fancy" silks (I think they're either 2mm or 4mm) are great. I believe that you can fit up to 10 of these very light silks into a hank ball.

Question about the Hank Ball and loop:
Does anyone use that today? I have two, a large one (I have to re-loop it), and a small, antique wooden one. I've never used them. I have found none who knows how to do these justice. Does the loop go on your first finger, or thumb? I kind of picture a routine similar to the coin routine Now-U-See-It-Now-U-Don't, but not sure if that's accurate. Being a "Palmo" kind of guy, it would be nice to see someone who is a master at the Hank Ball...(funny, that brings to mind a visual of a formal dance at the Magic Factory in Boston! LOL! ) Doug |

The loop goes on the thumb normally. It basically allows you to show your fingers open.
I have played with it but I wouldn't say I am a master at it. I am going to give a little food for thought (I had mentioned this to Duane), some of the manipulation he suggests on his video are impossible to do with a fully loaded hank ball. You cannot insert your thumb into it. I think books on Billard Ball manipulation can give you some handling ideas.
