HA! It was all a RUSE to get your opinion on an idea of mine.
For my new recycling show, A Big Pile Of Rubbish, I'm doing a routine about REDUCING the amount of packaging. My thoughts are that I would do a card to impossible location where the card ends up wrapped up in a many layers of packaging. With each layer we remove I come up with something the kids or producers could use INSTEAD of the packaging. E.g. IN a plastic bag (let's bring our our own bag) there is a card board box (we can recycle this can't we? Maybe make a toy box!) and in the box there is tomato can (if you buy fresh vegies it better for you AND you don't need a can) and in the can there is....etc. In the last box is their selected card. Here is my problesm a) Its very hard to get large numbers of young kid's to understand card tricks. What else could I use? b) Why do I have the card selected? Aside from it being a magic trick. I'm a big believer in internal logic. c) What can do that is BIG (I have audiences of 300+) that every one see? If I use something REALLY big then what method should I use. (I can't imagine do MCF with a jumbo card) Thanks in advance good lookin'! |

Sigh! It's such a burden being a sex god!
Okay, to work: Instead of the card and the wrapping, why not use a Gag Bag with an item inside at each change of color( you could have plastic bags, bottle caps, etc.)? The gag bag also works well before large audiences. cheers, Peter Marucci |

Peter, he was obviously talking about me - not you!
:) Nicholas I agree with you about card tricks for kids, too difficult for some of them. Also are you teaching about "reducing the amount of packaging" for their own good and knowledge or because there is something they can do about it? I might go more for the angle of what THEY can do to help conserve. I have never done a recycling show but maybe some ideas: A slush powder and cups trick combined with a lota bowl could have a "vanishing water" effect followed by a "the water is BACK!" effect! Then ask THEM ways they can think of to save water. An AXTEL board could "talk" to them about wasting. Maybe your drawing is the "bad kid" who wastes and you have to talk to him until he understands. Torn & restored items (rope, silk, bills, newspaper, etc) clearly show that something OLD can be made NEW again. A "Mental Epic" board (the 3 prediction board) could be used to have them call out 3 things they can recycle, and look - you predicted each one!! A customized "Mismade Flag" routine - instead of a flag use 3 silks that each have a word on them - "You", "Can", "Help" (markers on light colored silks), But twice they "blend" together wrong - "Can Help You" - and "You Help Can" - finally it comes out "You Can Help". A Coke can Vanish or zig-zag & restored. (both marketed items) Ooh - just thinking here- A customized "Sucker Die Box", re-do the die to resembled a brown box (as in cardboard), have it pre-placed in a small trash can off to the side (act like you found the cardboard box in the trash can and your amazed someone would throw it away - someone who doesn't care about recycling) then present the die box as a "recycling machine" place the "trash" in the machine and do thru the "sliding" bits as though you have lost it - act confused and concerned. The audience should laugh and scream at you - finally you show that the box IS gone and you say, "It has been recycled and is no longer considered... TRASH!" As you now remove it from the trash can. (c'mon - not bad huh?) A Square Circle (also known as a trash can) could continuously be shown empty yet always producing recycle-able items (cans, packaging, paper, plastics, etc) - "Hey, who put THIS is the trash!", etc. etc. A customized "Magic Coloring Picture" (the frame and photo that slides out and colorizes) hmmm...I'll keep thinking. Jeff

Don't forget options like borrowed bill to impossible location, borrowed ring to impossible location, borrowed watch to impossible location, borrowed coin to impossible location, etc. Those are just some of the options instead of a playing card.
The money (bill or coin) seems like a good option because: 1. you can get it signed. At the end it is verified for the larger audience. 2. you can talk about wasting money with too much packaging. There is your justification for doing something with that prop. 3. if you "loan" your own money to them at the start of the routine (have it autographed), you can give it away as a souvenir at the end of the routine, to your volunteer (thanks to Peter!) - Donald. P.S. I do a ring in nest of boxes, similar routine to Sammy Smith's. A borrowed object to an impossible location is a great crowd pleaser. I read about your banana on another thread, Nicholas. Good thinking!

Update on the Axtel drawing board - it could be a talking (sometimes crying) trash can drawing...

Wow! Thanks for all the great ideas!
Peter - I love the gag bag idea. Particularly if each layer has a bit of garbage printed on it! Jeff - I agree that the important thing is to teach them a lesson that inspires change NOT just a bunch of tricks with a vaguely waste reducation theme. Kids can help reduce packaging by choosing to buy things that don't come excess packaging, not getting plastic bags, telling their parents to buy fresh foods rather then prepackaged ones etc.. Donald - I love the don't waste money idea! I was also thinking that a picture the child has drawn of me would be a good thing. Since kid's normally buy objects of desire in packaging, the middle object should be something they really want (like money) The concept of the show is Waste Reducation with a particular focus on rubbish. (rather then water, fuel etc.). I have six routines. Two Reduce: *Vanishing Plastic Bags (that won't vanish...after all, they're not biodegradable) *This new effect. Two Reuse *What's Next: A piece of paper that you can use on six sides, saving paper. *Worm Farm: A square circle with appearing worms and flowers that grow. Kid's help decide what rubbish worms want to eat Two Recycle: Infinity Cola: A can of coke is opened, poured into a cup and drunk and then refilled and resealed magically. Torn and Restored Newspaper: a collection of newspaper clippings about recycling restore into one new paper! I then produce a ten foot pole covered in paper to show how big the pile of papers would be if the recycle one a day. But I've mentioned this elsewhere... |

How about that trick were you build up bits of rubbish to make a car that becomes motorized and it drives round the stage, that would be a great finish. Also are you using the rabbit?
And I saw this on your site 'In 2004 and 2004 Tricky Nick is creating' just thougjht I would let you know incase it was a mistake. Matt |

They performed on one of the Champions of Magic specials, and I have seen them live at the Wizards in Hollywood 5+ years ago doing this. They've even had a cover story in MAGIC magazine on this couple. Best not to steal a piece that another act is world-famous for. Here's another example on the Café of someone trying to steal another person's propietary effect: Thread titled... Lance Burton's Floating Birdcage. Perhaps Matt didn't know this already existed in a world-famous act. If you really want to do it, I would ask Nicholas Night for permission first, as it does seem to be his propietary effect. - Donald. P.S. It doesn't matter that Matt suggested a car instead of a tricycle for this. It's still the same effect.

Not wishing to start any Arguments, but what constitutes an act being world famous? I must say that this is an act that I haven't heard of.
Donald wrote. You might not wish to use that bit, as that is the finish of the world famous act of Nicholas Night and Kinga. Also if Matt came up with this idea without knowing about Nicholas Night and Kinga, then why shouldn't he use it. Assuming that he had no idea about them.

Use alphabet cards. Children (goats have kids) can appreciate the cards and realize that each card is different. Use cards with with anything on them that the children can identify. It's not a big problem.

No I didn't know about Nicholas Night, I saw a clown perform it, it was a really nice trick, I thought it must be a dealer item.

Not all of you program needs to be magic tricks. Have a mystery with each new clue found in a different package you produce. Then ask how this package could have been recycled or replaced. At the end what you find are prizes for all the kids.
My plastic surgeon thanks you.

I was think about the prizes idea. Since the trick before uses three helpers I could tell them I have present for each of them. Perhaps a balloon animal (whilst mentioning that animals get caught up in packaging when its thrown away. e.g. a bird, a fish and a poodle. ).
In fact you could have a series of cards which presents written on them. One baby goat picks a card which has BALLOON written on it. I open all of the packaging to find three balloons. I'm seen Nicholas Night's routine in magic magazine. Its looks quite fun but not really by style. Although, He did steal my name so I can steal his trick! For me, its fine for two magicians to come up with the same idea. The concept of building machines or objects from garbage which come to life are pretty common in TV. The makers of the Police Academy movie made an entire movie out of garbage! |

I once made a smokestack botania for a chap that topped off a recylcing factory. Put all the garbage in and with the proper care and recycling it turns into flowers.

Hi Nicholas,
You could perorm the Six Card Repeat, using cards with pictures of garbage. THe routine can show how even though you recycle three cards, there's always three more garbage.Show how it never ends so we must always recycle.

I am surprised no one yet mentioned Mike Rappa's book Recycling the Magic Way. http://hanklee.org/xcart/customer/search......ecycling
It is one the rare gems in theme shows since the magic mirrors the message. As for your reducing packaging idea he suggests a coin and nest of boxes. He suggests a particular set to help add to the theme. The book is worth the price and then some. |

Not sure if it's been mentioned above yet, but torn & restored newspaper seems to be a natural...to explain how paper can be destroyed & recycled to be re-used?

Hi Almost A Magician - T & R paper is already there! Great minds think alike
mghia - Thanks for the suggestion. I don't usually like buying whole routines for theme shows because a) most of them are not particularly educational and b) they act as crutch. But I do like the look of Rappa's book. I might buy it anyway.... |
