Most of the ideas mentioned so far are in the book.
No need to reinvent the wheel. |

I think that whilst we have mentioned the NAMES of a few tricks we haven't really gone into the details of a routine. For example, Torn and Restored Newspaper could be done as a self recycling paper or you could quote statistics from the paper or any number of different ideas.
I am sure Rappa's stuff is great but it is far more important to create our own ideas for routines and only use these ideas as inspiration. Imagine if theatre companies just rented the video of Hamlet and copied it on stage instead of created their own interpretation! |

The ultimate in recycling is Healed and Sealed. A very magical way to take the concept of recycling way past the norm.
I think magic can be complementary to the message and does not necessarily have to be a great "message" hammer we hit them between the eyes with. Talk about how aluminum cans are recycled and then show them how a magician would recycle a Cocacola can. BTW Has anyone seen my Botox? Ahem another plastic surgeon reference, and that is Botox NOT Buttox. Now that I think of it, that could be yet another plastic surgeon reference.

Hi Frank,
Of course I noticed your botox....that's why you're a 'good looking' magician! I first learnt Healed and Sealed a few years back but I didn't like a) the fact the can STARTS empty and b) the 'sealing' of the can wasn't as clean as I wanted. So I created Infinity Cola. In this effect, the can starts FULL! I empty it into a glass and drink the whole can. Then empty can can then be uncrumpled as per Healed and Sealed if you desire. The can is also sealed up without having to TOUCH the mouth of the can. And of course, you open the can and empty out the soft drink. It uses one can and no switches. |

Ha ha ha, but your ideas are already in the book since they are the most logical.
Sorry but in an educational show sometimes more imporant to use ideas that WORK to demonstrate the message so children LEARN. Quote:

Yes....
My point is that every single possible interpretation of an effect is not in this book or any book! I'm happy to draw inspiration from such sources but I would like to maintain my own creativity. Whilst I might 'reinvent the wheel' every now and again, it still helps me to head in new directions. These books should be used as a tool and not a crutch! Hi all! I just did two performances of the show today. One for 5 year olds and one for 15 year olds. That both went quite well dispite the 15 year olds turning up uninvited! ARGHH! |
