Hi fellow magicians:
I need some book advice from you. I am an intermediate level magician and have been wondering what large magic books I should buy. I am looking for something that has lots of usable tricks & information. Something that I could study and use for years. I've heard a lot of good things about the Classic Magic of Larry Jennings, Sankey Unleashed, and Greater Magic. I don't have these books because I don't know which ones to buy. I wish that I could buy every magic book there was but I can't do that so I have to be selective. What large magic books would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

I can offer two suggestions depending on you needs:
General Magic - The Complete Wilson Card Magic - Revolutionary Card Technique Both these books are quite large and contain a wealth of good information. Wouldn't it be better to base your purchase on the quality and NOT the quantity ? |

Yes, I am looking for quality that's why I am asking for some advice. I do have Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic and all of the Tarbells but I am looking for some more good magic books.
I don't have the Revolutionary Card Technique book but I will take a look at one. Thank you for your suggestions dazbaz. No dpe666. I'm not compensating for something and I know that the size of the book does not matter but I wanted some books that have a lot of different tricks and ideas in them. I probably should of said good books instead of large books! I have never heard of the Red Book Of Mentalism. I'll take a look at that book if I can find it somewhere. It's hard to find good magic books. Thanks for the reply dpe666..

The "Color Books Of Mentalism" are little booklets written by Max Maven back in the later part of the 1970's and early 1980's. They are not in print anymore, and Max says he will not reprint them. They do, however, seem to be on E-bay quite often, but be prepared to pay. I would suggest getting The Magic Of Michael Ammar. In my opinion, one of the best books on magic ever written. |

The Art Of Astonishment set would be my choice.

I would consider one of the magazine compilations.
Personally, I would go with Richard's Almanac. Good Luck.... |

Thanks guys.
You know something weird dpe666? I was actually thinking about the Magic Of Michael Ammar book but I forgot to type it in my post. Wow! That's strange. You are a mentalist aren't you? Max Maven's name seems familiar to me but I don't know anything about him. I think I've seen his name somewhere before. stevenamills, I’ve heard of Richard's Almanac but know nothing about it? You mention that it is a magazine compilation. What does it contain and why do you suggest it? Nir Dahan, I've Never heard of MMM by TA Waters. Can you tell us a little about the book and why you like it? Cameron Roat, is Greater Magic back in print yet? Does anybody know if they still plan to reprint it? I keep hearing a lot about this book but it is OOP. What do you guys think of the Classic Magic of Larry Jennings and the Sankey Unleashed books? Are they ok or do you think they are junk?

You cant beat the Classic Magic of Larry Jennings for strong close up magic... One of the top 5 books of all-time (IMO).

Hmm. Sounds like the Classic Magic of Larry Jennings is one to really consider. A lot of people seem to like it. S.Segal, what are the other top 4 books you think is good?
Here's another book I just thought of. What about Tommy Wonder's; Books of Wonder? Do these contain a lot of information and do you think that they are worth buying? There are so many good books out anymore. It's getting harder every year to keep up with everything going on in magic.

Both marko and eryanic mentioned the Art of Astonishment (AOA) by Paul Harris. I've always heard that the magic in the AOA was impractical to perform and that the book was over rated.
Peo Olsson, I've never heard of the Stewart James Files. 2590 pages? What is in that book? You could chew on that book for awhile... eryanic I've heard of David Regal's Constant Fooling but know nothing about it. Can you tell us a little more? I've never heard of David Regal's Close up & Personal or Jay Sankey's Sankey Pankey. Why do you like these books? Fayaad Manie, what does RCT stand for? Also isn't the Collected Works of Alex Elmsley just card magic? While I'm thinking of it, what do you guys think about the Apocalypse Volumes?
