Is their a proper angle when trimming dove's toenails, like there is for birds of prey? And, what do you use to clip you doves nails with, scissors, fingernail clippers, or nail clippers specially for animals?

When you are clipping you bird's nails, do you wrap them in a towel to keep them secure?

Also, if you do manage to cut the 'quick' (the sensitive flesh under a fingernail) and the nail starts to bleed, do you use styptic powder/aluminum sulfate powder to clot the blood, or just apply pressure with a cotton ball until it stops?

Zack, it's a good idea to stay maybe a centemeter away from the vain part so that there is no risk of bleeding. I only accidentally clipped the vain once on one of my birds and I just applied pressure until it stopped.

There is a misconception about trimming a doves nails. You don't have to cut them back very far. All that is necessary is that the very tip be removed. That is what catches on silks and pockets.

If you trim them regularly, you shouldn't have to worry about the quick but if you do cut it accidentally, stypic is fine, flower and water works and if you're in a real pinch, a potato will also stop the bleeding. It's the starch the does the work.

There is no angle to worry about when trimming. Some actually cut the nails but I prefer to use a nail file and gently file off that tiny tip. No need to hold the bird with a towel. You only need to stroke the file a few times across the tip.
