What do others think? I have all his books and videos, and I think he must be one of the best if not THE best (obviously I don't include Steve Forte, Jerry Andrus, Andrew Wimhurst, Paul Wilson, Guy Hollingworth and all those guys).

I don't think anyone can be the best. But Darwin Ortiz is definitely hard to match.

Sooooo, Darwin would be the best of any group that doesn't include all the other "best" cardmen? Now there's a distinction!

This thread was started with minimal thought.
slydini9, Just what are you asking or proviking. Are you saying Ortiz is the best or not? Are you saying that the other performers you mention are better than Ortiz? What have you learned from owning all of Mr.Ortiz books and videos?

1. Pure sleight of hand
Darwin Ortiz is one of the best at executing the various moves. Martin A. Nash is one of the best at executing the various moves. Andrew Wimhurst is one of the best at executing the various moves. Paul Cummins is one of the best at executing the various moves. 2. Engaging performer Mr. Ortiz is not one of the best. Martin A. Nash is one of the best. Andrew Wimhurst is one of the best. Paul Cummins is one of the best. What makes the above individuals engaging, except D. Ortiz, is their personalities. I can sit through their videos and enjoy watching them perform. D. Ortiz, on the other hand, tends to put me to sleep. |

This thread sounds like a provocation.
I believe that most of Darwin's released material on tape entails a lecture setting. The presence of magicians greatly affects the initial chemistry. I attended a lecture of his in Sacramento a few months ago, at A1. He spent the previous evening, recording what will be a 4-dvd set, concering the material from Scams & Fantasies With Cards. Word went out that they were looking for 50 audience members to be there. I called, and Mike told me that Darwin had called him back and made a "no magicians allowed" addendum. When I went to the lecture the next night, Mike told me that the "layman only" thing had greatly affected the chemistry between Darwin and the audience. I suspect that Darwin's subdued performance persona will be misinterpreted less after the release of these DVD's. Beyond that, I'm not sure that this thread will accomplish what I believe to be an honest goal--but will invoke the tireless negativity and name-bashing that seems to be the hallmark of internet boards. |

"Darwin Ortiz the worlds greatest card man" Tastes are very personal. So even though Mr Ortiz is one of my favorite performers, I also know that other people might not like him as much, and I might not like their favorite performers as much too. Slydini9 just wanted to express his opinion, so lets just respect it for what it is, and for the others; why don't you just agree to disagree, and leave it at that. my 2 cents.
