I just had the pleasure of seeing my friend, Jonathan Neal, work at NEMCA after many years. Still the same old polish and movement but his whole act for this collector's convention was silk magic. Stuff with dye tubes, wonder boxes, hank balls and Kuma Tubes. These were not just a bunch of things thrown together but finely honed routines that one would be well to study even if you did not want to do silk magic. The blocking, movement, progression of the effect and the climax of the effect showed the hours of practice and thought that went into these routines.
He has written up a wonderful booklet on his complete Wonderbox routine and his Kuma tube routine. I know years ago he wrote up his dye tube handling in Genii and I loved it then as now I do these new monographs. These are not just quick notes, but the complete routine, movements and patter, that shows how a pro puts it all together.
I don't often recommend booklets but these are solid routines that can help you do these effects or teach you how to work on your own routines.
Don't worry about what is new....look for what is good. This is.

"Don't worry about what is new....look for what is good!" Wish that was on every Cafe thread.

Oh, how I wish I could have attended NEMCA to see that performance! I have his booklet on the Silk Wonderbox and I agree with you it is great. Even if you don't end up performing the routine, it's a masterclass on how a top professional approaches using a classic "standard" prop for maximum effect. I'm hopeful at some point that Jonathan will publish a book. His excellent Genii column that ran in 2018 - 2020 , "Secrets Within Secrets" seems as if it was a preview of what such as book would be like. He takes you step-by-step how to make the props (or adapt and improve existing props) along with every fine point of the performance covered in great detail. Each of those articles was a masterclass. One of the best things published in the modern Genii era. If you go back to the Larsen-era Genii , Jonathan had several pieces published in Charlie Miller's Magicana column, including a great handling for the Japanese Handkerchief Box.

Also in Genii..How to make a Jap Box. As always...hide in print if you don't want anyone to ever do it. Magicians inherently do not read...especially the old stuff. Some of the stuff I found in the Klosterman collection was light years ahead of what is being done now.

Is Neal's book avaiable to purchase? I looked on the net and couldn't find it.

I also wondered whether the book is suitable for people (like me) who haven't done silk magic.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob G, Although I may someday put all I have into a singular book, at the moment all I have are monographs focussed on a single subject: Linking Rings, Multiplying bottles, The Kuma Tubes (massive silk production) and the Demon Wonder Box ( the world's largest small scale silk production). Any of these booklets is between 40 and 50 pages and heavily illustrated with as many as 100 photo images.

Any of these booklets sell for $40 each and you can buy them directly from me by contacting me at JNWonderbiz@gmail.com

As for its suitability for the non silk performer, the degree of difficulty (particularly for the DWB... Demon Wonder Box) is modest and doesn't require manipulative skill, rather the technique is well hidden by logical actions. The Kuma Tube booklet requires a bit more in terms of construction.

A collector friend recently bought the silk wonder box booklet. He was surprised how clearly and completely it was writen. JNeal has knack for clearly writing and explaining things. Nice photos and illustrations make it all easy to make. Now are you going to do this, probably. But if you don't you will learn how to properly put together a routine, block and routine it.
If you have access to Genii magazine past issues, there are several articles written by JNeal that you can read and see how he writes and explains things.
But my vote is to go for it, I really don't think you will be sorry. But a very good question.

Bob,
I think you will find Jonathan's instruction complete and easy to understand, I did have the benefit of learning from him at a lecture, but I have both his booklet on LR and DWB and I think you will have no problem with the material the way it is presented.
