By Brainwave, I mean the version where the entire deck is shown face down. One card has a different back, and is immediately shown to be the named card
Standard handling involves counting Has anyone tried this: just spread and show one card's red, THEN show the faces and allow free selection of any card they see. They pull it out and see it has the different back Presentation could play up spectator's magic intuition or somesuch |

I'm sorry, I forgot that the standard Brainwave has the named selection face-up in a face-down deck so my method actually wouldn't work
What I'm describing is actually my handling for Christened Reverse. Instead of naming any card, I show a face-up deck and have them think of any card they see. Since all the cards they can see are already "odd-backed," the method is fool-proof. |

You can mark several cards and then no counting I’ve done this for over 50 years

This IMO is the definitive version (so far) of the Brainwave Deck. Absolutely brilliant refinements from Martin MacMillan.

Two really good versions of a newer type of brainwave, and being able to see the front of the cards, are SLOB by Simon Lovell,
and Bob Solari's brilliant and super clean brainwave (deck can be examined....) on his Live in your Living room videos. I am really thankful for this discussion, I will start doing brainwave again. done right, it is a killer. I agree, being able to see the faces of cards and having a free selection of a face up card makes this more convincing! |

Here's is an idea I just had last night. It probably isn't original, but if you have not considered it you may like it.
Make up your own Brainwave Deck using marked decks - with marks that work well for your eyes. After hearing the chosen card announced by the spectator, remove the deck from the box with the appropriate side showing. Bring the deck up to face level and fan the cards slowly looking for the correct marked card and separate at the point. I think I would have the deck in a known order you can do a cut if needed to prevent the named card from being at the top or bottom or even very close to those ends. |

Here is where I think magicians get to "magiciany" and paint the lily a bit. Once you have shown them it is face up in a face down deck, isn't that the deal? I mean who cares if it is a red card, blank card, polka dot card, or any other card. You have ALREADY shown them you knew which card they would select. It is not as if they somehow get to name what back this card has. To the thinking person it is simply no more of a big deal what the back of the card has on it.
It has always been my issue with the Brainwave Deck. I know, I know, I'll stop the blaspheming now.

I understand your thinking Danny, but instead of saying you’re thinking like a magician, I am going to say you’re not thinking like SOME laymen.
For example B’Wave by Maven is a similar concept. Yes you could just show one of four cards turned the opposite way, but it would not be as impressive to most laymen. I am totally of the opinion that we don’t give laymen enough credit, however that doesn’t mean we can’t garner a possible bigger reaction in the moment, when they are reacting instead of already applying logic. Yes logically it makes sense in B’Wave that the card being face up is some evidence that you predicted that they would choose that particular queen. However showing that the back is a different color and that the rest are blank solidify it even more in a lot of laymen’s minds. Which in turn garners a bigger response. They may later if they think about it logically realize it was all flair showing the back color difference and then the blank faces but in the moment of astonishment you can probably get a little bigger reaction. I would also argue that three phases of magic (or moments of magic) trumps one any day just from a structure standpoint.

Sure that is absolutely what most magicians think.
I disagree, but that is what is wonderful with the world. I in no way would say that it is "wrong" to think that way. Not for a second. I do see exactly what is being said, my mileage varies a bit is all. Not better, not worse, just different. In my view we already have WAY too much thinking exactly the same way about the same thing happening in the magical arts. I like it when others have other points of view. I am in NO WAY any authority or the final word on anything about anything anyone does except myself. Thank you for allowing for my point of view. Best!

Too often when I post flippant or use offhand remarks they get interpreted as if I think there is only one way. I never think that. I only know what is right for me, and can discuss others from my point of view.
I think the only way creativity works is with diversity of opinion.

I have come up with a slight variant of what I mentioned above. I let them look at the faces of all the cards in their hands They think of a card and
can change it as much as they want in their mind, until they commit to one. I find their card and it has a different color back than all the others. They can examine the whole rest of the deck. People often ask to examine the cards I really don't understand why magicians love highly gimmicked decks for this effect. I know they will say, they never ask to examine them... I just don't believe it..... Also a plus is that you don't have to count cards at all. |

Not blaspheming, I arrived at pretty much the same conclusion.
