Watchdog, there are more than legal issues involved.
Cruise, I salute you. There is a lot of publishing of *variations* going on that is perhaps unneeded. Mr. Gallo, I consider joy and fun to be on a similar area of the emotional spectrum. I have fun with Art, but it does go deeper than that. I think it something like food, or sex, or the air I breathe...to explore, to create, to perform, or to think along these lines is something I MUST do. I've been to eight countries myself, and now living in the Republic of Panama, I know exactly what you mean on the girls. I've had a girlfriend down here for the last two years that provides plenty of Artistic inspiration. So, if you're ever down my way, look me up, we may not agree about magic, but I'll buy you a drink, and show you the town. And for those that think I'm going too far, asking too much, I am a realist in some ways. I know that it's unlikely I'll get everyone to go all the way...but to paraphrase the old quote, if I shoot for the sun, I'll hit a hell of a lot higher than if I shoot for the bush. |

Mirthrandir, that is a very nice gesture...and trust me, if ever I am in that area...I will take you up on your offer! Mike |

Just a quick note on citing sources, people and books. I agree that putting ones footnotes and citations inline with the main text can bog down the reader. The scholarly style of writing for journals uses superscripts to number and cross index the reader to other works. Likewise it is unusual to write in such a style that requires citing a source more than once in a given context. The intent is to communicate WHAT IS NEW, and the writer expects the reader to do their homework. Again, this is the style of scholars. Thanks to hyperlinks in MS Word or in HTML, we can make our references viewable and addressable for the reader with a single mouse click for electronic documents. I like those ideas and methods.
On a more direct and personal note: should I have asked Alex Elmsley for permission to teach my count, as it is derived from his count? Perhaps I should have. The original writeup(s) back in 87 and last year were both in the form of an open note to him, and still it would have been better IMHO to have asked directly. That's my feeling on the matter. Anyone have Mr. Elmsley's email address?

Many scholars nowadays use in-text citations along with a bibliography/works cited page, instead of the footnote style that you mention. While sometimes it varies within disciplines, I know that it is at least the standard in biology journals.

Steven Dushbeck,
Welcome to The Magic Café!! It is a pleasure to have someone as talented and imaginative as you here as a member. I for one are very glad that you joined and hope that you will be a frequent poster. I sent you a PM regarding your Waltzing Matilda - any idea who might still have this item? Do you make them? If they are no longer being sold is it possible to buy instructions (if it can be made at home without much skill). DickLucas Steve Dushbeck, Forgot to mention that I also asked about your sliding shell, if you have them or recommend a dealer? Is Todd Lassen on your dealer list. I just want to make sure that I buy it from someone that has your authorization to produce them. DickLucas

Richard,
I purchased the copper/silver transpo (with sliding shell gimmick) a year or so ago directly from Mr. Dusheck. I think he still sells some of his stuff direct. I wish he would put out a catalog so we could see what he has new and old. Jeff

Alas, Steve no longer sells anything. He is totally disillusioned by magicians and dealers claiming his inventions their own; rather than fight it he simply closed his doors.
Seems like our society keeps secret patened items but freely assimilates what is not. (Resistance if futile.) This speaks volumes of a lack of morals. Then when I hear how "awful" it is to give away a simple trick, the word hypocrisy comes to mind.
