Is there a name for the little "magical moves" that we use when signifying that the magic just happened? For example, snapping a card, tapping the back, or giving the deck a quick thumb riffle?
I tend to call these mini-flourishes or non-flourishes, but in spite of all the times I've seen these moves in performances, I don't think I've ever seen this topic dealt with in print or other instruction.
Is there a good source or comprehensive list of these types of moves? I think it would be very helpful in designing my act and performing persona.

Hey Brad,

I tend to call these "magical gestures", although you could call them "magical movements". Clicking your fingers (overused), casting a shadow à la Vernon, waving your magic wand, and so on. Because you're using your hand, head or body to activate the magic.

One I've used recently is putting a card on a table and asking a spectator to knock on it three times. It creates a familiar, but slightly spooky sound that works well if you're leaning into a bizarre magick presentation.

Vernon's Twisting Motion from "Twisting the Aces" is another good example that I use when performing many reversal effects, not just Vernon's classic packet trick.

I guess what you're specifically talking about are flourishes used as a substitute for a magical gesture. In this case, I'd probably describe them as flourishes. Maybe "magical actions" as they activate the magical effect.

P.S. Ortiz called these moments the "False Cause" of the magic, so maybe something like Catalyst, Trigger or Activator.
