Hey I have a new effect out called the book of treasures,
The Coloring Book Enters the 21st Century! You flip through a book titled "The Treasure Map to the Libraries," showing a picture of a large treasure chest on each page, explaining that "The library is like a treasure chest." Next you ask the audience, "What kind of treasure you might find in the library?" When they respond "Books!" you flip through the book again. But this time the pictures have changed to books! "That's right," you say. "Books are the treasure we find in the library." You further explain that "The true treasure is the knowledge that we gain from reading the books. And the best part is it's available to everyone!" As you say this last line you begin to flip through the book again, this time showing treasure chests opened up and full of treasure. And now for the finale: You now fold the book in half (lengthwise) and have the audience recite the magic words, "Reading is Magic!" As the magic words are said, you pour from the folded book a supply of golden coins! Perfect for schools and libraries Great for reinforcing the importance of reading Easy to do Packs flat A real crowd pleaser! |

Ken,
My, this does sound interesting. In some other posts I have been asking questions about library shows, and this certainly sounds excellent. Do you have a website that lists your products, or are they available only through dealers? Finally . . . since you did not mention it in your post, what is the price of this effect? Bruce |

Are you using this in your shows still? Does your audience tested routine come included? Thank you p.s. When is the next video due out? Just got in my Book of Treasures, and Library Monte. These are awesome effects. Highly recommeded! |

I LOVE the idea of the prop but I'm not so sure about the reading routine. Its a book with no words! How does that encourage reading (just kidding)
Seriously though, the number one question I would ask is "Does this trick encourage kids to read?" I'm not so sure that it would since the focus is on the treasure and the reading message is an extra metaphorical message. Would the book be blank at the end? Perhaps if the book was full of words, i.e. a story book, it would leave kids with a strong mental imprint of a book and reading. |

Actually the tricks shows the value and the importance of libraries. The way I tell the story is as I show the treasure box I tell the children if we open the lid to the box or if we open the door to the library what do we find? Most of them say books. As they say this the books now appear in place of the treasure box. I then tell them if they read the books in in the library that they can find all the hidden treasures in the library , then I flip throug again and it has the box with gold. I then tell them when we/they read books that the books can come to life, at this point I dump the real coins out from the book.
The book is a great warm up effect. IT gets them to hear me and for them to get involved in the show by answering my questions. The book was just for me in that our theme was Books Ahoy(about ocean, treasure boxes, etc). The librarians really like the effect from what I saw on my evaulations. No the book is not blank at the end because for me the trick is over when the coins come out. Does this get kids to read? Good question. I think it has the kids say what they already know. It again tells them what the library is, what the books can do. It really is in the patter not the trick. The trick is a great visual. ken |

I guess the best question to ask is, what does really get the kids to read? Is there really tricks we can do that will convince the kids to read?

If no trick will make kids then read then the entire magical educational market is a sham!
I think that MANY education routines are not actually educational mainly because magician's tend to not have educational qualificiations or experience. Instead of saying "What are the goals of this show?" we say, "what are magic tricks about reading?". I've spoken to a lot of teachers and libraians about this issue and they all say that kids really don't care about WHY they should read, they tend to want instant gratification. The more I think about it, I think this routine could be REALLY good in the hands of the right magician. However, I think many magicians would focus on the magic instead of the message. As I mentioned here http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......7&20 I think the BEST show you could do to encourage children to read would be to pick 5 or 6 good books and create an effect that shares an element of the book. E.g. One of the HUNDREDS of Harry Potter tricks. You then tell the kids for more magic they can read the book. Educational magic shows should a) Create a catalyst for children to want to learn or act. e.g. kids should come away wanting to read. b) Dramatise the essence of issue in a magical way that educators such as teachers and libraians can build on later. e.g. in my watse show I produce a ten foot newspaper pole to show how many papers we each throw away each year. c) Add fun to an issue that kids might find boring. e.g. a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down! |

I think Air Head rudy is the best actual prop for reading provided an excellent routine and structuring go with it. It can be drawn out into a very nice story line (Ginn's routine is excellent).
I still don't have the Book of Treasures yet but I have heard some really good things about it.

I have used this effect a number of times at school shows and it really gets a response. I like it. The only thing I don't like about it is that you cannot really roll up the book without damaging the front and back covers. Just be careful when you roll the book up to pour out the coins.
Also I have to cut a little off of the pages to make it 'flip' correctly. Ray |

Glad it has worked out. You actually don't need to roll up the book all the way just simply roll the book in half and pour out the coins.
Thanks Ken http://www.kenscottproducts.com I have them on my site but the trick is going to be out of production for a while as I lost my printer that was doing it for me. |
